💿This photo was taken THIRTY years ago today!

Meet 16 year old me at my first music retail job; Our Price in Stirling on the 5th September 1996. It turned out to be the start of a career that has seen 8 record shops from Stirling to Dundee to Sydney to Edinburgh.

It is such a privilege to sell music for a living and to be surrounded by people and things that I love. Thank you to all of you for making it possible.

Here’s to another 30 years in the music business. I’ll dust this photo off again in 2056 by which time Minidiscs will be the major format, folk will still be saying ‘records are making a comeback’, Oasis will still be on their reunion tour and Taylor Swift will be POTUS.

I’ll leave you with a few stats from that fateful day in 1996;

In 2019 my big brother, Matthew, was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. He was 40.

In 2020 we climbed Ben Nevis for MS Society Scotland and raised an incredible £14,197.

In 2022 Thorne Records opened and since that day a % of every sale has gone to MS Society Scotland. So far we have raised over £2679.59 and this figure grows everyday thanks to all of you.

In 2026, on Sunday the 20th September, I am running a 10k! Now, anyone who knows me, knows that this is ABSOLUTELY not my wheelhouse, comfort zone or cup of tea. I know to some folk a 10k is easy peasy but for me the thought of it is hell on earth. I’ve never done it before and I never want to again. I was the guy who was picked last in P.E.. Everytime. I never played sport. I like music, b**r, films & crisps.

So WHY am I doing it?!

Because Matthew can’t and he would if he could.

In the years since our Nevis summit, Matthew has professionally retrained, got engaged to Jessica and earlier this year they had their first child, the wonderful Ivo. He has never complained or let MS get in the way of achieving the things he wants to achieve. As the great George McFly said, ‘If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything’.

So PLEASE dig deep and sponsor me to run this bloody horrific 10k to help those that think I’m a total dick for complaining about running 10,000 meters.

With your support, I want to raise as much money as possible to help the MS Society Scotland find effective treatments and ultimately cure this terrible condition that affects 333 per 100,000 people in Scotland, one of the highest rates in the world.

Hey everyone, Jake here. Mark has decided that he “deserves a holiday” so it's up to me to keep the place from burning to the ground. There are going to be some MAJOR changes, so listen up:

Number one: The shop will be operating on holiday hours! This means that while you’ll still get all your vinyl and banter needs met here at Thorne Records (name change pending), I’ll still be needing to tend to my other duties while the boss is working on his tan, i.e., looking after his cat Rambo and having the occasional nap.

The temporary opening hours are as follows:

Monday 10 am–5 pm

Tuesday CLOSED

Wednesday 10 am–5 pm

Thursday 10 am–5 pm

Friday 10 am–6 pm

Saturday 10 am–6 pm

Sunday 11 am–4 pm

Change number two: That's basically it!

So come on down to GREENWOOD RECORDS! Don’t worry, not TOO much is going to change. I mean, it’s not like I’ll accidentally upload a mock-up for a new colour scheme instead of a regular photo of the shop.

25/6/26 will be the first ever OFFICIAL Global Beatles Day! A fan-first celebration of the greatest popular artistd of the 20th century; The Beatles. It is held annually on 25th June; the day The Beatles performed ‘All You Need Is Love’ for the first time to a global TV audience at Abbey Road in 1967.

To help Thorne Records commemorate the day, the Apple Corps team have sent us some beautiful posters and a big box of badges for our customers to proudly pin to their person
