Craft & Thrift

Craft & Thrift Hello! I'm Amy, welcome to my shop. Craft & Thrift is designed to make shopping secondhand for your sewing needs as easy as possible.

All the fabric is thrifted, deadstock or vintage and I also sell a range of recycled notions and secondhand books.

This very summery fabric went out of the door this weekend and I couldn't help but snap a pic! ☀️
I'll be closing the shop for the whole of August whilst I sort out the longer term plan for Craft & Thrift. I'm still searching for a buyer for my inventory so if anyone knows a small business person looking for significant quantities of deadstock fabric, feel free to hit me up in DMs!

I wanted to share this before ➡️ after of a repair I did recently.
I fixed this 30yr old backpack and logged it on who are trying to log 10,000 repairs by the end of the year. They're trying to spread the word about reusing and repairing outdoor clothing and equipment. Technical fabric and complicated designs make repairing outdoor kit intimidating, especially if you're trying to maintain a specific function, like 4 way stretch or waterproofness (real word). So sadly a lot of it is binned when it's damaged, and can't easily be recycled since there's a high proportion of man-made fibres and mixed materials (fabric, metal, plastic etc).
This was a relatively easy repair. I unpicked the seam between the cord channel and main body of the bag, trimmed the damaged parts and restitched the seam. It was fiddly but manageable. One section kept fraying away so I reinforced it with a bar tack and did a second line of stitching to try to minimise further fraying.
Hopefully it'll last another 30 years!
🤞🏻 ♻️

I made a thing! And if you sign up to the monthly newsletter (link in profile ☝🏻) you'll hear all about it shortly!
This is the Linden made in ponte from my shop. The red and white band is made with quilted scraps. I've been working my way through the Improv Quilting course and I'm loving it!
✂️
For those who sent kind words about my recent announcement in stories, thank you very much for your support. For those who missed it - Craft & Thrift shop will be closing in August. The blog and newsletter will continue and the shop may come back in a smaller, curated capacity in the future but in the short term, cashflow, the economic climate and lack of sales have forced me to sell off 90% of my inventory.
I'm still contemplating Craft & Thrift's future but I know for sure that there's more in the tank for this wee biz. I just need some time to gather my thoughts and decide what to do next. I'll be sharing some of those thoughts with newsletter subscribers soon so if you're interested in small biz chat, be sure to sign up ☺️

I've been experimenting with remnants, using my Improv Quilting for Garment Sewists course from Sew DIY Patterns | Beth Wood]. I bought it using birthday money last month and I'm loving it!
I've not actually made it as far as the quilting part yet, I'm enjoying using my newfound skills to play around with scraps ♻️
I wanted to create some projects that help use up scraps and remnants to go alongside my remnant bundles that will be hitting the shop over the coming weeks. I'm currently wearing my latest creation, so that's super satisfying.
Sign up to my newsletter to read more about my new quilting adventures and pop over to Beth's feed Sew DIY Patterns | Beth Wood] to check out the course! 💚

Happy solstice friends ☀️💛
There is something magical about the longest day, although these photos are from an earlier Turtle trip 🐢⛰️🚐
We'll be going away later this week to enjoy some nature and peace. I hope you can find a moment of peace in nature wherever you are today.

Popping into your Monday evening feed to remind you that I've got lots of colour combos of remnant bundles available in the shop!
They're split into 1 metre bundles and 2 metre bundles and there are multiple colour combos and price points within each listing.
Let me know if there's a clearer way to list these - maybe individually? I'm still experimenting with what works for my lovely customers (that's you!)
I'm also playing with the packaging bands and listing descriptions, I'm going to add suggested patterns or clothing types to help guide people's decisions.
There's a link in profile ☝🏻, feel free to comment below with any suggestions or feedback! 👇🏻

I'm starting to think about Christmas presents because I am a) unnecessarily organised and b) trying to save money. I've gone through cycles with presents - all handmade, none handmade and everything in between. This year I feel better prepared than ever to make presents - I've got the stash and the skills. So I figured I would start a spreadsheet (because I'm a nerd) to plan my presents and track them as I make them.
This pattern is perfect for presents - the I'm So Basic Sock from .lee.knits
It's a nice straightforward pattern and you can use it to maximise your stash. I used this self striping yarn that's been in my stash for a long time. They're not exactly the same, I ran out of the white yarn, but they look good enough to be gifted!

I had been holding off on posting this because it's so hard to take nice photos of un**es 😂
It's perfect timing tho, with lingerie week in Sewing Bee last week, plus talking about my Sew Your Own Un**es kits recently.
🩲
These un**es were made using my kits and the Zoe Edwards] underwear pattern. It goes up to a size 50" hip and my kit comes with everything you need to make 3 pairs of sustainable underoos:
1️⃣ 3 cuts of coordinating deadstock jersey (enough for the largest size of the pattern)
2️⃣ 7m of coordinating fold over elastic (enough for the largest size)
3️⃣ 100m spool of 100% recycled Gutermann thread ♻️
4️⃣ The Zoe Edwards] pattern pieces printed
5️⃣ A QR code link to the instruction to be downloaded
It all comes in a recycled and recyclable smart box so you can store your bits together or gift it to a fellow sewist!
New colour combos are coming soon, in smart new packaging, but in the meantime there's a link in profile to the available kits ☝🏻

I made this waxed cotton drawstring bag for the Turtle (our campervan 🚐) to hold a roll-up water carrier. It's made with stash remnant fabric and an elastic drawstring that came off an old coat years ago.
This kind of sewing is my fave - using up remnants and bits that would otherwise have been shredded for landfill. It's so satisfying to repurpose something and give it new life, whilst avoiding buying something new at the same time ♻️
Want to make your own? I've popped a link in profile to all my secondhand and deadstock cottons so you can sew sustainably with ease!
