🌸 Happy Saturday a wee daily blether from Nikki
Morning guys! Happy Saturday ❤️
We’re open 8am–4pm today, and it’s Evie, dixie and myself in the shop, so if you’re passing, pop your head in and say hello. We genuinely love when customers come in for a blether although I can pretty much guarantee what the main topic of conversation will be just now… the bus lanes. 😂
And I know some people are probably thinking, “Nikki, why are you fighting this so much? How much is it actually going to affect you?”
The truth?
Probably not as much as I originally thought.
Yes, it will affect my business. Deliveries, loading, customers getting parked, funeral work, weddings, big tributes there are plenty of things I’m concerned about.
But this stopped being just about my shop a while ago.
Take the baked potato shop next door to me. He’s been there for around 30 years. His lunchtime trade is his livelihood. Those few hours when people can stop, grab their lunch and go matter enormously to a wee business like that.
Then look along this whole stretch of road.
We’ve got dog groomers, barbers, plumbers, florists, the potato shop, hairdressers, cafés, a bridal shop and loads more. I’ve actually lost count of how many businesses there are.
And that’s the thing I think sometimes gets forgotten.
They’re not just businesses.
Behind every shopfront is a person.
Someone paying rent.
Someone paying wages.
Someone putting food on their table.
Someone paying their mortgage.
Someone paying for their kids.
Someone who might have spent 10, 20 or 30 years building that business from absolutely nothing.
And behind those business owners are employees whose wages depend on customers continuing to walk through those doors.
That’s why I’ve fought this so hard.
It isn’t because I think the whole of Edinburgh should revolve around Nikki’s Fleurs. 😂 Far from it.
It’s because I look along this road every morning and I don’t just see shop signs I see people I know trying to earn a living.
Small businesses don’t have endless pots of money to fall back on when trade drops. Sometimes losing a handful of customers every day is the difference between making it work and eventually deciding you just can’t do it anymore.
Maybe that’s why I’ve taken this so personally.
Anyway… that’s enough bus-lane chat from me for five minutes. 😂
The kettle’s going on, the flowers are waiting and we’ve got a Saturday to get through.
