Reupholstery that can take a Saturday night rush

Bar and restaurant seating takes a battering most domestic furniture never sees. Spilled drinks, constant turnover, hundreds of bodies a week.

We work with hospitality clients across Edinburgh who need seating that looks the part and holds up under real pressure, night after night.

Traditional coil springing with horse hair stuffing gives excellent durability for high-use banquettes. Modern serpentine springs with foam offer a firmer, more consistent seat for busy dining rooms. We special order several rug ranges, and every one can be finished with edge whipping to create a bespoke rug or runner sized exactly to your space. That means an awkward hallway or an oddly shaped landing needn't stop you.

Rugs also do practical work. Lay one under a coffee table to protect vinyl or LVT flooring from scuffs and dents, or use one to bring warmth to a room with hard flooring in it.

Curtain heading styles: which one suits your room?

Choosing a curtain heading changes the whole feel of a window, not just the fabric on it.

Pinch pleat is the classic choice: tailored triple folds stitched at the top, giving structured, elegant drape. It suits period Edinburgh homes with taller windows and formal rooms.

Eyelet headings hang from metal rings threaded straight onto the pole, creating soft, even folds. They're simpler, more contemporary, and easier to draw.

Goblet pleats are the most decorative of the three, rounded at the top and padded to hold their shape, best suited to statement rooms where the curtains are meant to be noticed.

Fabric weight matters too. A heavy interlined curtain holds a goblet pleat beautifully, but the same style in a light fabric will collapse and lose its shape.

That chair frame or veneered chest holds more information than most owners think to look for. The joinery method, the timber choice, even the type of stuffing under old upholstery can tell our craftsmen how a piece was made and what it needs now.

Our team handles french polishing, veneer replacement, chair frame repair and re-upholstery, all from our own workshop in Edinburgh. Knowing a piece's age and origin changes the approach. A Georgian frame needs different handling to a 1930s one.

106 years in Morningside, one family, no shortcuts

Some things are worth trusting because they've been tested for over a century. James Erskine Interiors was established in 1919 and we're still run as a family business today, right here in Morningside.

That kind of continuity means something practical. The craftsman repairing your grandmother's dining chairs learned the trade from people who learned it the same way decades before. We can french polish, replace veneers, repair chair frames and re-upholster, all under one roof, using our own workshop.

We've mended moth holes in Persian and Turkish rugs so they can be passed to the next generation. We've fitted carpets from Stornoway to Dumfries and re-seated the Brunton Hall Theatre in Musselburgh. Different scale, same standard.

Pattern matching: the detail that makes upholstery look right

Get pattern matching wrong on a re-upholstery job and even the best fabric will look off. It's the difference between furniture that looks tailored and furniture that looks like it was wrapped.

Our workshop handles both traditional and modern methods: coil hand springing with fibre and horse hair stuffing for period pieces, and serpentine springs with foam and polyester for contemporary furniture. Each construction affects how a patterned fabric needs to be cut and aligned across seams, arms and cushions.

Striped and check fabrics show up misalignment fastest. A stripe that jumps half an inch at the seam catches the eye before anything else does.

Large repeat patterns, florals especially, need extra fabric allowed for centring on the main panels. Skimp here and the pattern looks randomly placed rather than deliberate.

Fabric that copes with paws and claws

Pets and good upholstery aren't natural enemies, but the wrong fabric will show every scratch and moulted hair within weeks.

Tightly woven fabrics stand up far better to claws than loose weaves. A dense weave resists snagging, so cats and dogs can't pull threads loose when they jump up or settle in.

Darker tones and subtle patterns hide pet hair and the odd muddy paw print much better than plain pale fabrics.

Our re-upholstery workshop in Morningside can bring an old sofa or armchair back to life with fabric chosen specifically for a busy household. We'll talk you through weave, colour and cleanability before anything's cut.
