This week is Dementia awareness week.

Poor hearing is believed to be the main modifiable risk factor for dementia. This Dementia Action Week, Oticon stresses the importance of taking action to treat hearing loss.

If you are unaware that dementia can be prevented or delayed, you are not alone. It is a condition most people associate with age, when in fact, it is not necessarily a normal part of ageing at all.

Tackling this common misconception is of the utmost importance as 10 million new cases of dementia are recorded globally each year and is expected to rise exponentially. It is reported that there are 12 modifiable risk factors that account for up to 40% of dementia cases - unaddressed hearing loss is believed to be the leading preventable cause of dementia.

A delay in addressing hearing loss can have serious adverse effects on your health and lifestyle. Depression and low social contact are particularly common effects of poor hearing, both of which are also known modifiable risks for dementia. Unfortunately, it can often be difficult to notice if your hearing is reducing as it can happen very gradually. You may not immediately notice that you can no longer hear the birds chirping or your own footsteps anymore. It is all too easy to get used to and live with reduced hearing ability, often for many, many years.

“Hearing loss can be a barrier - do not keep that barrier up unnecessarily because of stigma. Let’s break it down together.”

When Rachel was told that she needed hearing aids in her early thirties - she froze. She had such a negative perception of hearing aids but when she saw two young men in their 20's with hearing aids and using BSL - her perception changed.

As a children’s entertainer, she thought she would have to give up her job as she believed her new hearing aid would get in the way. But she says that it has actually made her so much better at her job. Now she wants to see more young people proudly showing off their hearing aids. 🦻

Do you have it in you to help train a hearing dog?

If you are thinking about a new challenge for 2026, have you considered training a life-changing hearing dog?

We are urgently looking for volunteers in certain areas of the UK who can help us train the next generation of hearing dogs, like super Star.

Here are 5 useful things to know about becoming a volunteer trainer:

1 - You don’t need experience as each of our volunteers are fully trained and supported by one of our local dog training instructors.

2 - We cover all costs for things like food, bedding, insurance, vets etc.

3 - We arrange and provide all holiday cover for the pup when you want to go away.

4 - You’ll attend fun weekly training classes and meet likeminded people.

5 - You’ll change a deaf person’s life.

We’re looking for volunteers to support our dog training programme in one of two roles: Puppy Trainer or Dog Trainer.

You might be caring for a puppy from 8 weeks old, helping them learn the basics and explore the world safely, or supporting a young dog from around 12 months old as they build confidence and reinforce more advanced training goals.
