Yesterday I stated that we do not sell organ music, this morning I have been dutifully corrected by Kevin.

We do in fact have this spectacular piece for organ and symphonic wind band. Can you imagine playing this in York Minster? How fantastic would that be!

Bandleader on Tour!

This coming weekend we'll be in York for another Captured in Music wind band weekend.

When you think of music and York the first thing that comes to mind is the huge organ in the Minster. It has over 5000 pipes and was installed in the 1830s after the previous one was destroyed in a fire.

I discovered there is also another instrument in the Minster. The Horn of Ulf. It belonged to a Viking nobleman who gifted the land the Minster is built on to the Chapter of York and apparently the horn was used as a land deed. It is made of an elephant tusk and it is thought it would have been a "calling horn" although it has been adapted to be a drinking vessel. If you want to see it, it is in the Undercroft Museum at the Minster.

Sadly we don't have any organ or calling horn music, but we do have lots of pieces for wind band, bagpipes and brass band!.

We're off to Shrewsbury on Friday for Captured in Music.

❓ The big question is how do you say it?

Is it Shroosbury or Shrowsbury????? We're having a bit of a debate here at Bandleader HQ.

Kevin & Jean are team Shroosbury whereas I've always known it as Shrowsbury.

So I did what all sensible people do and Googled it. To my horror it implies I'm posh!!!!

So I did some more digging. In Middle English (1066-late 15th century) ew was often pronounced oh like in sew. Some older maps also spell the name phonetically Shroesbury or Shrowesbury. However in modern times there's been a shift and most of the younger generations are more likely to go with Shroosbury.

However you say it, we're very much looking forward to visiting and hoping it won't be too hot!!!! 🥵

August has arrived and I'm currently in Aberdeenshire, heart of the Highland Games. At present the weather is not too shabby (can't be certain about the coming week... 🌧️)

Who doesn't love a steam railway? Especially a narrow guage one.

This is the Talyllyn Railway in Tywyn, Wales which was originally opened in 1865 to transport slate from the quarries down to the main line. It reopened as a heritage railway in 1951.

Running for just over 7 miles and gaining around 700ft in height it's a scenic journey up to where the inclines originally met the line at Nant Gwernol.

It is also the railway that inspired the Reverend W Awdry to write the Thomas the Tank Engine books!!

Although not about this railway, Richard Hubbert's The Little Railway evokes the feelings felt on any small guage railway and can't fail to put a smile on your face.
