WILFRED POET-TREE,DESIRING PEACE
Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Frank Ross,helped Tynecastle High School pupils plant a special cherry tree on Monday to mark the birthday of First World War Anti war Poet Wilfred Owen, who was born on March 18, 1893.
Several other European schools have also planted cherry trees on the same day , each to be known as the 'Wilfred Owen Poet-Tree, Desiring Peace' –the latter part of the title referring to the Anglo-Saxon meaning of the poet's first name.
His early poem,”Written In A Wood,September 1910” ,by a 17 year old Wilfred Owen,was read at all the planting ceremonies .
The other secondary schools are in Oswestry ,on the English/Welsh border,(where Owen was born );Ors in Northern France,(where he died in 1918 and is now buried )-The Lord Mayor of Ors ,Jacky Duminy helped local pupils plant their tree;Waldorf School in Hannover Germany ,and a school in County Armagh,Northern Ireland.
Each tree represents Peace,Respect,Equality,Friendship &Wildlife /Environmental Protection.
The plan now is for the schools/pupils to link up with each other and in turn,invite other schools to plant a flowering Cherry, to create a meaningful,lasting Peace/Friendship Union ,at a time when their European Union is under threat!
