In the 18th and 19th century the South Yorkshire area was an important centre for the production of fine quality pottery. World famous 'Rockingham' china was produced at Swinton on the Earl Fitzwilliam's Wentworth estate close to Elsecar. Rotherham and Doncaster museums have extensive displays and information on the history of local ceramic production. A visit to our shop in the Elsecar Antique Centre will give you the opportunity to purchase a genuine antique piece of local history.

Some 46 years ago a very respectable antique dealer sold these as Brameld...and ÂŖ31 wasn't cheap.

I am still shown photos of the treasured Rockingham pieces that have been in people's families for generations which are in fact unmarked Staffordshire.đŸ˜Ĩ.

Small cream jug and sugar bowl.... pierced creamware with a crazed glaze.
Unmarked but attributed to J T Morton.
(I have the same piece with the Morton Filey mark.)
Could have been made at Leeds or after his move to the coast.
As mentioned before, these Morton pieces are very finely potted and if unmarked it's mainly the glaze that identifies them from the earlier Leeds items.

Has anyone seen these before or illustrated in reference works??

As you see they are circular 4 3/8" dia and one has the Leeds Pottery 1" impressed mark.
They have the crackle glaze of the Morton/Seniors period late 19th/into the 20th century.
Depicting "J Haydn" and "Beethoven" names in relief above the heads.
As you can see they have a small hole to enable hanging which is glazed inside indicating it was added during manufacture.
The smaller oval ones are recorded in creamware and basalt but not this size 🤔.
I haven't started trawling the NCS journals etc but I thought I would ask the Leeds experts amongst us first.

As mentioned before I still haven't found a study which pinpoints this group of sponge base prattware Tobys to a specific pottery....they are supposed to be from Yorkshire though..😁😎R.
Not cheap if you add on the commission + considering the slight damage.

Just thought I would share a few results from today's Rockingham sale.
Some on estimate and some well above.😃...nice to know there's still interest in these beautiful and rare pieces.
The spill vase has the romantic view of Wentworth Woodhouse park....that makes it another of these scarce decorations to come to auction after the two plates last month.
The early red ground cup & saucer with shell painting has the Yates Leeds mark which makes it a rarer than normal piece.
Remember to add 30% on top of the hammer price to arrive at the actual cost.😁👍😎R.
