Thinking of planting pleached trees? Here's how to create a seamless privacy screen above your fenceline 👇

One of the questions we're asked most often is:

How far apart should pleached trees be planted?

Our recommendation is simple: plant pleached trees so the frames are touching.

The planting distance we recommend should match the width of the pleached frame. For example, if you're planting trees with 1.2m wide frames, plant them 1.2m apart (centre to centre). This creates a seamless pleached hedge above the fence line with no gaps between the trained canopies.

This spacing principle applies to all of our pleached trees, whether evergreen or deciduous, and whatever frame size you choose plant each at the actual tree widths.

Not sure how many trees you'll need? Simply enter the length of your boundary length into the Spacing Calculator on the relevant pleached tree variety page on our website and it calculates exactly how many trees you'll need for your chosen frame size.

At Paramount Plants, we supply over 17 evergreen pleached varieties and 33 deciduous species, available in a wide range of trunk heights and frame widths to suit every garden and screening project.

How to choose the correct trunk height?

Trunk heights are usually matched to height of your fence as far as possible to form the bushy part above the fenceline. So 1.8 to 2m are most popular trunk heights for a traditional uk fence height but we have many other trunk heights to choose from. Trunk heights do not grow just the bushy part grows upwards and outwards...

Our tips below but one idea is this 🌳 Many customers are buying their mature trees and shrubs now and choosing September delivery.... Why? Cooler autumn weather gives new trees and shrubs the best chance to establish, while you can secure today's prices and offers now.

Alternatively you can plant now if preferred this summer and our standard delivery time is around 2–3 weeks from ordering. Unlike a small parcel, larger, more mature trees and shrubs require careful planning and handling.

Plants need time to be moved between our growing sites, quality checked, prepared for dispatch and transported using specialist vehicles to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition.

During the busy summer season, coordinating this process takes time—but we believe it's worth it to deliver healthy, well-established plants.

If planting this Summer ☀️ established plants will need care

💧 Top 10 Water-Saving Tips to Help Your Garden Thrive This Summer

1️⃣ Water early in the morning or later in the evening.

2️⃣ Give plants a deep soak rather than watering little and often. You can fill a watering can

3️⃣ Water around the base of the plant, where the roots need it most.

4️⃣ Add a 5–6cm layer of mulch to help retain moisture.

5️⃣ Collect rainwater in a water butt whenever possible.

6️⃣ Reuse water from washing fruit and vegetables, or collect the cold water while waiting for the hot tap to run.

7️⃣ Prioritise newly planted trees, shrubs, vegetables and containers during hot, dry weather.

8️⃣ Move pots and hanging baskets into the shade during extreme heat and use saucers to reduce water loss.

9️⃣ Choose drought-tolerant plants for sunny spots—or order now and choose September delivery for planting in cooler autumn conditions.

🔟 Raise your mower height and don't worry if established lawns turn brown—they'll usually recover when the rain returns.

🌿 If your goal is privacy, choose these dense, fast-growing trees ❤️ love them or hate them, Leylandii remain one of the UK's most effective screening trees.

When properly maintained, they create one of the densest, thickest and fastest-growing evergreen privacy screens you can plant. They also provide valuable shelter and nesting sites for birds, making them a fantastic choice for wildlife as well as privacy.

The key to success is understanding their needs. Like any conifer, Leylandii thrive in well-drained soil with the right balance of moisture. During the first 2–3 years, while they're establishing, regular deep watering is essential—an irrigation system can make this much easier, especially during dry spells.

The secret to success? Don't plant them and forget them. Keep them healthy and dense by pruning at least once a year, ideally twice a year. Most problems associated with Leylandii occur when they're left to outgrow their space or are neglected.

With the right planting, watering and maintenance, few trees can rival Leylandii for creating a beautiful, dense, year-round green screen.

Eight years ago, apart from a mature cedar, willow and birches this garden was almost a blank canvas.

Today, the difference is remarkable.

The trees have created layers of shade, privacy and a noticeably cooler garden during the recent heatwave. Under the Silver Birch, Japanese Acers and surrounding planting, the temperature feels dramatically more comfortable than in the open sun.

That's because trees don't just provide shade—they help cool the surrounding air, create their own microclimate and make gardens far more enjoyable during hot weather.

Every year we simply add a fresh layer of mulch to improve the soil, retain moisture and keep roots healthy. Once established, mature trees need surprisingly little maintenance. Most of the work is during the first year while they establish. Today, we spend just a few hours weeding, pruning where needed, annual mulching and occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

The result is a low-maintenance garden that's become more beautiful, cooler and more relaxing with every passing year.

Featuring Silver Birch, Japanese Acers, Hydrangeas, Photinia Red Robin Crown lifted, Portugal Laurel Hedging, Liquidambar 'Gumball', Camellias, Taxus Domes etc this garden proves that carefully chosen mature trees don't just transform how a garden looks—they transform how it feels.

🌳 Why settle for a parasol when you can grow a living canopy?

With UK heatwaves becoming more frequent, more of us are spending time outdoors and looking for smarter ways to enjoy our gardens.

Today, trees are no longer planted just for their beauty—they're planted with purpose.

A Roof Form Tree (also known as a Parasol Tree) creates a beautiful living canopy, providing natural shade, cooling, privacy and a welcoming outdoor space that grows more valuable with every passing year.

Unlike a parasol, a living canopy becomes part of your garden. It doesn't simply block the sun—it helps cool the surrounding air naturally through evapotranspiration, creating a more comfortable place to relax during warm weather.

It also creates something many gardens are missing... privacy.

Whether overlooking neighbours or relaxing in a sunken patio, a Roof Form Tree creates a gentle sense of enclosure, softening views into your garden and transforming an exposed seating area into your own peaceful garden sanctuary.

Choose a tree that works beautifully for your lifestyle:

❤️ Photinia Roof Forms for vibrant year-round colour. 🌿 Morus Roof Forms for generous cooling shade. 🌳 Hornbeam Roof Forms for timeless structure and privacy. 💜 Wisteria Roof Forms for a spectacular flowering canopy. 🌳 Platanus Roof Forms for magnificent architectural shade.

A living canopy offers:

🌳 Natural cooling and welcome shade during hot weather.

🌳 A more comfortable space for dining, entertaining and relaxing outdoors.

🌳 Increased privacy and a greater sense of seclusion.

🌳 A valuable habitat for birds, bees and other pollinators.

🌳 Beauty, structure and seasonal interest throughout the year.

🌳 A long-term investment that becomes more beautiful with every season.

As the way we use our gardens continues to evolve, trees are becoming more than ornamental features—they're practical, purposeful additions that help create cooler, greener and more enjoyable outdoor spaces.

Why settle for temporary shade when you can grow a living canopy that will transform your garden for decades to come?

After planting more than 50 Japanese acers in my own garden, I can honestly say they're the one tree I would recommend for almost every garden.

From the rich crimson leaves of Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' to the fresh greens of classic Acer palmatum varieties, there's an incredible range of Japanese acers to suit every style of garden, whether you have a small courtyard or a large country garden.

Japanese acers are loved for their elegant structure, stunning seasonal colour, and delicate-looking foliage. They bring beauty all year round, from fresh spring growth and summer texture to spectacular autumn colour and beautiful branch structure in winter. One of my favourite moments is watching their leaves gently dance in the breeze or seeing the sunlight illuminate the foliage—it creates a magical atmosphere that's hard to beat.

Although they look delicate, don't be fooled. Japanese acers are surprisingly tough and hardy trees when planted in the right position.

To help them thrive:
🍁 Mulch when planting and then every spring with organic matter to help retain moisture and improve the soil.
💧 Water regularly while they're becoming established, especially during dry spells.
🌿 Choose a sheltered spot with well-drained soil, and many varieties will reward you with decades of beauty.

These are just a few of the magnificent mature Japanese acers you'll find here at our display nursery. Seeing them at this size is the best way to appreciate their incredible colours, shapes and character—and to choose the perfect one for your own garden.

Which Japanese acer is your favourite – deep red, vibrant green or something in between? 🍁we are happy to find one to suit you
