Updated World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations 2026-2027 mean that every crew member shall have a gas-inflated lifejacket compliant with ISO 12402, with strict requirements around fit, features, certification, and servicing. The regulations now stipulate that lifejackets must be serviced and certified in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendation, this means that self-service is no longer an option. Owners and skippers should also note that most lifejacket manufacturers will not allow certification once the lifejacket reaches its 10th year.

Key points to check:
• Correct specification including crotch or thigh straps
• Manufactured after 2011
• Correctly sized for the wearer
• Fully certificated service history and available for inspection
• Serviced annually by a manufacturer approved service station

Responsibility sits with the Person in Charge to ensure all lifejackets on board are compliant and in date.

Ocean Safety is here to support racing crews with:
• A wide network of approved service centres across the UK
• Fast-track servicing for Ocean Safety products, subject to availability
• A full range of compliant lifejackets, including Ocean Safety Sport, Sport ADV, XF, and Spinlock ranges

Make sure your crew is compliant, serviced, and ready for inspection.

Contact your local Ocean Safety branch to book servicing ahead of your next race.

Summer is coming and you want to pick up a lifejacket. So, you are thinking of picking it up a second-hand from Vinted or eBay? 👀

A pre-owned lifejacket can be a great way to save money but only if it’s safe, serviceable, and suitable for your activity on the water.

Before you click “Buy Now”, make sure you:

✔️ Check for rips, tears, damaged webbing or broken buckles
✔️ Ask for clear photos of the inflation system, cylinder and capsule
✔️ Confirm whether it’s manual or automatic inflation
✔️ Check if it has a recent service history
✔️ Look for signs of rust, mould or corrosion
✔️ Ensure the buoyancy rating matches your needs

Remember: if there’s no proof of servicing, book it in before use and factor that cost into your budget.

At Crewsaver, we’ve seen an increase in older second-hand lifejackets arriving for servicing and unfortunately, many are beyond repair.

A bargain isn’t a bargain if it won’t save your life when it matters most. Inspect carefully. Ask questions. Service before use. Stay safe on the water. 🌊

📢 Small Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport and Pleasure Code of Practice Announcement 📢

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has submitted new regulations for small commercial sport and pleasure vessels to Parliament, with a phased introduction beginning from the end of the year.

The RYA has been part of the technical working group throughout the development of the new code, helping to ensure updated safety, operational and environmental standards are effective, proportionate and workable for the sector.

Speaking about the new code, Niall McLeod, Head of Competition & Technical Services said “We welcome the new Small Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport or Pleasure Code of Practice which updates operational, structural and equipment standards to improve safety, communication and environmental protection.

This is the culmination of over three years work, throughout which our priority has been to help ensure that the updated requirements strengthen safety standards without placing any unwarranted burden on the sector. As such, we appreciate having had the opportunity to feedback during the development of the new code and are pleased several improvements have been taken on board. However, feedback has been considered at the discretion of the MCA, and some areas we would have liked to have seen improvements on remain unchanged.

As with any new legislation, a phased introduction for various elements of the code is welcome. There will no doubt be areas that require clarification as the range of vessels under the existing code, transfer to the new code”.

AI tools are becoming a part of everyday life, but when it comes to planning your time out at sea or on the coast, please remember this - AI is not a reliable source for safety information.

Tide times, weather forecasts, and other coastal safety advice could be inaccurate, leading people into dangerous situations. AI may also miss out information on local hazards specific to the area you're visiting.

Just last month, two people were rescued from Sully Island in South Wales after using AI to search for the tide times, which proved to be incorrect.

The RNLI Barry Dock lifeboat was sent, alongside Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team. Both casualties were recovered and safely taken to shore, with safety advice given by Coastguards at the scene.

Always check official sources such as the Met Office yourself for accurate beach forecasts and tide times. Trusted safety information can be found on the HM Coastguard website.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
