Keeping your plants happy during a hosepipe ban 💧
When every drop counts, a few simple swaps can help your garden through dry spells. From watering at the right time of day to making the most of saved water, here are a few easy ways to care for your plants while using water wisely:
💧 Reuse grey water where you can. Water from rinsing fruit and veg, washing-up bowls or cooled bath and shower water can be used on ornamental plants, pots and established borders – just avoid anything too soapy, salty or greasy, and don’t use it on edible crops.
🌅 Water early in the morning or later in the evening, when less will evaporate and plants have more time to drink it in.
🪴 Give pots and baskets a good soak with a watering can, rather than little and often — containers dry out quickly in hot weather.
🌿 Add a layer of mulch around plants to help lock moisture into the soil and keep roots cooler.
🌱 Move pots into light shade where you can, and group containers together so they create a little more shelter from the sun.
🚿 Trickle irrigation systems can be a great water-saving option, delivering a slow, steady flow directly to the roots where plants need it most. This helps reduce evaporation and waste, especially when used early in the morning or later in the evening. If you’re using one during a hosepipe ban, check your local water company’s rules first, as requirements can vary.
