We are now planning on closing the ‘day-to-day’ bookshop at the end of this month, prior to giving all the remaing books on our ground floor to The Saint Elizabeth Hospice in Martlesham, who themselves are planning a one day sale at the end of October. We shall continue the 50% sale until the end of this month, September, and thereafter I shall continue with my online selling from the basement, and will welcome regular customers to visit following a phone call to 07974 477414.
My sincere thanks to all for nearly 25 years of Poor Richard’s Books, and given my 75th year, and I wish the best for Groove Yard Vinyl who will take over the shop, and I hope everyone will support them as you have done to Poor Richard’s over the years.

Hi, to all: likely one on my last few posts for Poor Richard’s. Following Xmas this year I will be closing the bookshop on the ground floor, and given a pressing need to clear all books by then we will be having a half price sale on all ground floor books from the beginning of August, and then a £1 a book sale in December. Hopefully this will replay the fantastic loyalty we have had from customers over the last 24 years (1997 - 2021). I shall contiue to buy and sell books from the basement, mainly through the internet, but always by appointment for our regulars.
Grooveyard records have now bought the building, and plan on extending their business in the shop, and maybe something else!!!!!

So, given the ’last post‘ (ironic), I am planning to forego the ground floor of the shop and just occupy the basement at the end of this year. Meanwhile I plan a ‘severe’ sale of books as soon as Covid allows, and then towards November time something like a £1 a book sale. All my internet stock will be excluded and located in the basement. I have sold the building to Grooveyard Records.

Hello to all, and the first of a couple of posts, as I see we are pretty much back to square 1, and likely to be shut down until March at the earliest, which is pretty depressing for one about to enter his 75th year. I opened the shop in 1997, and it has grown year on year until maybe 2 years ago, so I am now anticipating closing at the end of this year.

It’s all kicking off again, and I am assuming we will be having to close again soon. With all four of us working at different times in the shop, and all four of us particularly vulnerable, who knows what will happen. Even now we are only open three days a week, and with the internet we just manage, so apologies to all if all goes ‘whatsitup’. Pity because recently just bought some quality items,

Nearly back to something resembling normal, still insisting on facial masks, hand disinfectant available, and cash deposits welcomed. This Saturday large outside £1 book sale, quality books, and paperbacks, and more cash deposits welcomed.

On a different tack, many will have noticed one window of the shop dedicated to Garry’s new Vinyl centre, shortly
to be opened to the rear of the shop, and full valuable and collectible 45’s and 78 discs, of which I know nothing!

Opening now Monday 11 to 2, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 11 to 4pm. Usually closed Wednesdays unless I’m there.

Well, welcome July, and welcome back our loyal customers: opened this week for the first time since early March, and am grateful for the amount of business we did do. We are limiting the number of customers for the time being, and I do appreciate the courtesy of those who are asked to be patient. Because our corridors and rooms are so narrow, we will have to keep this going for some time, and I cannot really expect our part-time help to control comings and goings, so sorry folks, it’s just me for now, with limited hours, 11 to 3, and closing Wednesdays. May even get the chance to buy some new stock in the coming weeks!

So, I guess this is my nearly last caronavirus post, what with social distancing being reduced to one metre, though it does not dramatically alter our ability to keep customers safe; so we will continue with one customer at a time, with the same requirements of visitors wearing gloves, using our sanitiser on entry, and being able to purchase face masks at 50p a time if they feel more comfortable. For the time being we will lock the door when we have a customer in the shop, so please ring the bell to find out about waiting times (who would have thought I’d introduce waiting times for Poor Richard’s.

Sadly we are unable to open yet: the idea of social distancing, one or two metres, is a risk too far in a shop that has many narrow corridors. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I’d be happy to allow people in if they phone first (0797447741), though 10 - 2 only
Internet sales keep me busy, and first buying auction this coming week: done a lot of hoovering too, particularly of books that have been here years; and moving things around, so not even can find anything now.

Now we’ll into the third month of this pandemic we’re very slowly beginning to plan for the future, but is there one for second hand and antiquarian bookshops. We, for example, stock some seventy thousand books, on two floors, and on shelves separated by corridors of no more than three or four feet. Not only will social distancing be a nightmare, but the whole concept of browsing will be questionable: one suggestion I see mooted is for all books that are handled to be withdrawn from shelves and quarantined for a few days!!!!
What I do know is that once we re-open, customers will be limited, requested to sanitise their hands on entry, to wear facial protection, and to avoid handling books just for the sake of it. I’m not sure, as a bookshop, in this day and age, we will have to anticipate queues!
We look forward, though, to welcoming regular customers and all visitors. Stay safe everyone.

Ok, so we are now in week eight, or is it nine, or forever, and still keeping busyish! Still reorgansing and consequetly have masses of paperback fiction to go to a good home ( all or nothing), likewise hardback 1st edition fiction in dustwrappers, and quantities of history, music, children’s etc etc.
We should be opening again in June, likely by appointment initially, and thereafter to anyone wearing adequate PPE, and numbers will be limited: but has anyone ever seen a queue outside Poor Richard’s, or even the shop overcrowded.
But we do honestly welcome back all regular customers, all Suffolk frequenters, and those from further afield. Just please accept they things have changed, hopefully for the better; and hopefully, given some time, Helen will be back organising me!

Approaching week 7, I need amplify on my last: we are not, repeat not, anticipating closing the shop, but in life the tide comes in and the tide goes out: right now it’s out!
Many will know I began with books after an early, somewhat forced early retirement due to pension issues. Well since I cannot sell books at present I thought I would do some teaching, so elder grandson in Colchester, this is for you......and for anyone else out there who’d like to challenge the following English Language test. All you need to do is rewrite this short passage, correcting all the deliberate errors, and then email me your corrected version ([email protected]) Please state your age and name.
