A MAJOR air and sea search is underway off the north Pembrokeshire coast in the early hours of Thursday morning (Aug 6), as police appeal for information about a missing 47-year-old man named Ben.

Ben was last spoken to by his family at around midday on Wednesday (Aug 5), when he intended to go rock climbing either in the Carreg y Barcud area, near Trelerw, or at Caer Bwdy Bay, outside St Davids.

A substantial search operation has since developed around the St Davids peninsula and surrounding waters.

The Herald understands that three RNLI lifeboats are involved: Fishguard's all-weather lifeboat, Angle's all-weather lifeboat and Little and Broad Haven's D-class inshore lifeboat D-899 Swaine-Legane.

HM Coastguard rescue helicopter SRG387, registration G-RESH, has also been carrying out extensive low-level searches of the area.

Flight tracking seen by The Herald shows the helicopter making repeated circuits around Porthclais Harbour and the nearby St Davids coastline, as well as searching offshore. At one stage the aircraft was being tracked at an altitude of around 525ft.

The helicopter subsequently flew to Haverfordwest Airport before returning to the search area, indicating a prolonged operation.

A second Coastguard aircraft has also been deployed. Specialist Beechcraft King Air 350 search aircraft G-HMGH, operating as SRG224A, departed Humberside Airport at around 1.48am and was tracked flying across the country towards west Wales.

The combination of two Coastguard aircraft, two all-weather lifeboats and an inshore D-class lifeboat represents a significant search and rescue response.

Dyfed-Powys Police says Ben is around 5ft 11in tall, of athletic build, with short brown and greying hair and brown eyes.

He was carrying an orange bag and wearing black climbing shoes with an orange strap.

Anyone who has seen Ben, or spoken to him since around midday on Wednesday, is urgently asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101, quoting reference 429 of August 5.

The operation remains ongoing and The Herald will provide further updates as information is confirmed.
