🌶️ Jalapeño Update! 🌶️

These jalapeño plants are absolutely thriving in the greenhouse and are already putting on plenty of fresh growth! There's nothing quite like picking your own chillies, we love to pickle ours and enjoy them during the year.

💡 Top Jalapeño Growing Tips:
✅ Give them as much sun and warmth as possible – chillies love the heat.
✅ Pot them on into larger containers as they grow to encourage bigger plants and heavier crops.
✅ Feed weekly with a tomato fertiliser once flowers start appearing.
✅ Water consistently, but avoid leaving pots sitting in water for long periods.
✅ If growing indoors or in a greenhouse, gently shake the plants when flowering to help with pollination.
✅ Harvest regularly to encourage more fruits to develop.

🌱 Little trick: If you want hotter jalapeños, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings once fruits have formed. A little stress can increase the heat level!

Did you know? Jalapeños can be picked green or left to ripen red for a sweeter, slightly hotter flavour.

🐌🚫 Greenhouse upgrade complete! 🚫🐌

After losing one too many seedlings to midnight slug and snail raids, I finally put up a hanging tray in the greenhouse! 🌱

The idea is simple: keep our young plants elevated and out of easy reach while they get established. It also frees up valuable bench space below for the peppers and other plants that are already growing on nicely.

So far, the seedlings seem much happier, and hopefully the local slug population will have to look elsewhere for their midnight snacks! 😅

Sometimes the best gardening solutions aren't fancy products—just a bit of creative use of the space you've already got.

🌱 Freshly Pulled: Radish Rosa 2 🌱

Just look at those vibrant roots! 😍 Rosa 2 is a fantastic radish variety that produces smooth, bright pink-red roots with a mild, crisp flavour that's perfect for salads, sandwiches and summer snacking.

💡 Growing Tip:
For the best radishes, sow little and often rather than all at once. A short row every 2–3 weeks will give you a continuous harvest, and keeping the soil consistently moist helps prevent woody roots and excessive heat.

These beauties grow surprisingly quickly too, often going from seed to harvest in as little as 4–6 weeks! 🚀

Peak British summer parenting: it’s 28 degrees, the potatoes are thirsty, and my son has decided trousers are simply a barrier to efficient agriculture 🌱☀️😂

Evening watering is actually the best time to do it in hot weather because less water evaporates in the heat, meaning the plants get a proper soak instead of it disappearing into the atmosphere in 3 seconds flat. Potatoes especially love consistent watering while they’re growing their tubers — dry spells can lead to smaller potatoes or split skins.

So while the neighbours may question why there’s a half-dressed child roaming the veg patch with a watering can… just know this is elite-level horticulture going on here 🥔💪

Turns out my purple sprouting broccoli has attracted some very determined visitors… and yes, even the pigeons have started moving in. 🥦🐦

Brassicas like broccoli are absolute favourites for pigeons, especially when plants are young, tender, or starting to flower. They can strip leaves surprisingly quickly, leaving plants looking like they’ve been through a paper shredder (as mine clearly have 😅).

For now, I’ve deployed a highly trained security guard… a Lego pigeon. Not sure it’s doing much to scare them off, but it’s definitely boosting morale in the veg patch 😂

Real protection usually means netting, hoops, or fleece if you want to keep your crops intact — because unlike my plastic friend here, the real ones don’t mess about.

Sweetcorn update 🌽✨

The sweetcorn babies have officially moved out and into their final bed! After starting them off in trays, they’re now planted out and ready to put on some serious growth.
Now comes the important bit—helping them thrive 👇

🌽 Plant in blocks, not rows
Sweetcorn is wind pollinated, so planting in a block helps the plants pollinate each other better and gives you fuller cobs.

💧 Keep watering consistently
Corn is thirsty! Don’t let the soil dry out, especially as the plants get taller and when the cobs start forming.

🍽 Feed little and often
A nitrogen-rich feed early on helps leafy growth, then switch to a balanced feed once they start maturing.

🌱 Mulch around the base
This helps hold moisture in, keeps weeds down, and saves you extra watering on hot days.

💨 Support against wind
As they get taller, they can rock in strong winds, so firm the soil around the base and keep them well supported.

🐝 Encourage pollination
A gentle shake of the plants on warm, dry days can help pollen spread if the weather is still.
Patience now… because no one likes corny results 🌽😏

Sweetcorn coming through strong 🌽💪

Starting them off in trays like this gives you a head start and stronger, more reliable plants — but the real success comes when you plant them out at the right time 👇

🌱 When to plant out
Wait until all risk of frost has passed and soil temps are consistently warm (think late May here in the UK). Sweetcorn hates the cold — rushing this step will stunt or even kill them.

🌡️ Harden them off
Give them 7–10 days to adjust to the outside world. Start with a couple of hours outdoors and build it up daily. No shock = no sulking plants.

📏 Spacing matters
Plant in blocks, not rows — about 30–45cm apart. This helps with wind pollination (more pollination = fuller cobs 🙌).

🕳️ Planting depth
Keep them at the same depth as in the tray. Don’t bury the stem too deep — they’re not tomatoes!

💧 Water well
Give them a good soak when planting and keep the soil consistently moist while they establish.

🌬️ Shelter from wind
Young sweetcorn can get battered easily — a sheltered spot or temporary protection helps them settle in.

⏳ Top tip
If the roots are just starting to fill the cells (like these), that’s perfect timing — don’t let them get root-bound or they’ll stall after planting.

🌱 Pea-s of mind gardening hack! 🌱

Sowing peas in guttering is a simple, space-saving trick that gives your seedlings the best possible start before planting out. Plus, it makes transplanting an absolute breeze!

Here’s how to do it:
👉 Fill a length of guttering with good quality compost
👉 Sow your peas evenly along the row
👉 Water well and place somewhere bright and warm
👉 Keep the compost moist but not soggy

In just a couple of weeks, you’ll have a lush line of seedlings ready to slide straight into your garden bed—roots and all!

💡 Top tips:
🌿 Add drainage holes to your guttering to avoid waterlogging
🌿 Use end caps (or improvise with tape) to keep everything in place
🌿 Harden off your seedlings before planting out to avoid a shock
🌿 Plant the whole row into a shallow trench and support with netting or sticks

Why it works:
Peas don’t love having their roots disturbed—so by growing them in one long “plug,” you can transplant them with minimal fuss. It’s sow easy… and your peas will thank you for it!
