New Tumble Dryer legislation comes into force on the 19/01/2027. Please read below to see what is changing
What the Legislation MeansThe Rule Change: From 19 January 2027, new appliances must meet higher minimum energy performance standards under updated Ecodesign regulations. Traditional vented and regular condenser dryers use too much electricity to qualify.No Ban on Existing Machines: You do not have to throw away your current tumble dryer. You can legally keep using, servicing, and repairing old vented or condenser dryers.Second-Hand Market: Buying and selling used or second-hand conventional dryers remains completely legal.Transition Period: Retailers can sell existing stock and new conventional models until the deadline on 18 January 2027. What is a heat pump tumble dryer and how does it differ?
Heat pump tumble dryers work on a fundamentally different principle from conventional vented and condenser machines. Instead of generating new heat with an electric element and exhausting or condensing the moisture-laden air, a heat pump dryer uses a refrigerant circuit to recycle the warm air already inside the drum, extracting moisture and returning the dried, warmed air back to the drum continuously.

This recycling of energy is what makes heat pump dryers significantly more efficient. A conventional vented or condenser dryer uses a heating element that runs at approximately 70°C and consumes 2 to 3 kWh per drying cycle. A heat pump dryer runs at approximately 50°C and uses approximately 1 to 1.5 kWh per cycle, a reduction of around 50 to 60% in energy consumption per load. The government’s figure of up to £910 in savings over a 20-year machine lifetime reflects this difference in energy use.

Frome friends to walk 50 km for local charity

Two Frome friends are preparing to lace up their trainers once again to take on an ultra-walking challenge for local charity Time is Precious.

David Wye, owner of Domesticare in Keyford, will be joined by his friend Elaine Keene for the 50 km event in London on 22nd August.

David and Elaine have completed a series of gruelling walks for charity over the years. During this challenge, they will be raising money for Time is Precious, which helps create a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for children in hospital or at home.

The volunteer-run charity has been operating since 2011. It was set up by Neil and Nicky Halford in memory of their son Ben, who died from cancer aged five.
