Makenge baskets are a testament to the weaving skills of the Mbunda and Losi people of Zambia. Originally used to winnow grains, but now used as decorative pieces.

The baskets are made from the Makenge tree, which sends out very long, shallow roots. Only the small roots are gathered, so the bush remains alive to produce more for the future. The roots are then boiled and dyed with natural pigments and left to dry out. Each basket may take weeks to manufacture.

A stunning and highly decorated set of three fine-quality papier-mâché trays with scalloped edges and an impressed maker's mark, 'B. Walton & Co. Warranted', verso. Circa 1840 - 1860.

Overall condition is very good with age-related wear/tear.

A well-proportioned George I walnut featherbanded, oak-sided secretaire chest on chest.

The moulded top above two short and six oak-lined long drawers with later engraved brass backplate handles and lock escutcheons; the bottom drawer of the upper section opens to reveal a secretaire with a fall front, six pigeonholes and four small compartments; above three further long drawers to the base, which is finished on bracket feet.

An adorable mid 18th century George II walnut and feather banded table top cabinet with eight pigeon holes and two drawers beneath. Finished on bracket feet.

Not sure wether this started out its life as part of a much larger piece of furniture or if it was always intended this way 🤷‍♀️. Whatever the story may be there's a real charm to its appearance.
