As the record-breaking heatwaves look set to continue, we look to solutions for the future.

Something which has been proven to help in multiple landscapes is increasing tree cover!

In cities – Research has shown that urban trees and green infrastructure can lower air temperature by up to 8°C through canopy shade and transpiration.

On farms – trees can provide cooling shade for livestock and localised windbreaks, which improve moisture retention and reduce soil erosion.

In woodlands – Woodlands offer wildlife cool havens in these conditions. In fact, research has shown that woodland can be 4°C cooler than regional temperatures. Increasing woodland cover is fundamental to safeguarding these populations.

PVC spirals are a cost-effective way to protect seedling hedges from animal browsing. They should be removed once they’ve served their purpose which is typically 3-5 years after planting – when the seedling is established and the spiral is still accessible to easily remove.

You can give your spent spirals a second life and save them from landfill with the Rainbow Spiral Recycling Scheme.

Simply order your bulk bags, fill them and let us know when you’re ready for collection. Rainbow will collect your used spirals to re-use the materials in their future products!

The 2026 Capital Grants offer is expected to open on Thursday 30th July. This scheme includes some tree and hedging activities.

While there is no closing date for the offer window, it will close once all funding has been allocated so best to be prepared and submit your application early.

The scheme’s budget has increased for 2026, rising to 225 million from 150 million in 2025, which will hopefully result in more successful applications.

Are you planting a hedgerow next season?
Like spiral guards but don’t like removing them once your hedgerow is established?
Rainbow’s Bio Spiral is made of a plant-based polymer so can be left in situ to degrade once it has served its purpose (3-5 years) with no damage to the soil.

W**d mat rolls are a great option for suppressing w**ds while your hedgerow establishes. Our Jute & Hessian roll is fully biodegradable and all natural. Made from mechanically recycled materials, no chemicals are used in the process. This matting will prevent w**ds for up to 3 years at which point it will degrade into the soil.

You can boost the survival rate of young plants by carrying out a few tasks while the sun shines…

Clear & suppress w**ds – w**ds compete with young plants for nutrients. Clearing w**ds and ensuring they don’t return means the w**ds don’t win. W**d mats are a chemical free solution to prevent w**d competition.

Check stakes & ties – Great for providing support for young trees, ties and belting should be checked to make sure they are not too tight or rubbing. We stock a wide range of tree tying systems to support young trees.

Check guards –Tree guards should be checked to make sure they are undamaged and effectively preventing browsing by wildlife. Once they have are no longer needed, they should be removed and recycled.

Carry out beat-up survey – Now is a great time to check your scheme for failures. If your tree doesn’t have leaves scrape back the bark, if the flesh is green, the seedling should recover. Note the number of failures ready to secure replacements for beat-up.
