Neighbourhood- local, friendly and ethical store needs you now!

We are at threat of closure due to a change of circumstances surrounding ownership of the shop we may have to close down for good. Our only other option is to turn the shop into a community owned asset and we think that’s a pretty exciting option!

I (Rhona) would be devastated to see the shop close and I know it would be missed by many community members and regulars too! As I cannot afford to buy my business partner out of her share of the business we are at risk of having to close down. My vision for neighbourhood has always been a community focused store and events space and so it feels like a natural progression for the store to become community owned through an organised community buy out.

Community owned shops are becoming common place across Scotland with extremely high success rates, however a Community buyout of a shop in an urban setting has never been done! Would you like to be part of a new movement to create more community owned spaces and assets within the City of Glasgow? Then this is your chance!

Imagine, a food store that isn’t just out to make profit on your essential grocery shopping but is actually set up to benefit you and your local community. Imagine an event space free to use for community members not just those who chose to buy in, replacing the missing community halls and other community owned spaces we’ve lost in cities!

I will be working with Community Share Scotland to organise a community buy out however first of all I’d love to consult the community and customers we have built up over these last few years, rally support for the campaign and put together a founding members board who will, alongside me organise and run the initial stages of the community buy out.

So come along for a chat, cup of tea and hopefully an inspiring time. These are the very very early grass roots stages of this process and coming along does not commit you to joining the community buy out, it’s simply a way to have your voice heard and show your support for what we are trying to achieve, discuss ideas and see if there truly is a desire for community owned assets in Glasgow!

Poetry Open Mic is TONIGHT at 6:30! Here are some of our host, ‘s favorite poetry collections! If you’re free to swing by tonight, signups will be open throughout the evening. You’re welcome to read or to listen.

Featured:
“If They Come For Us” by Fatimah Asghar discusses coming-of-age topics as well as gender and race as a Pakistani Muslim woman.

“New American Best Friend” by Olivia Gatwood tackles grief and girlhood with a tongue in cheek spiteful humor

“Calling a Wolf a Wolf” by Kaveh Akbar is an addiction recovery narrative. Each piece is surreal, soft and grounded in the natural or spiritual world

Event is BYOB and we’ll also have coffee available to purchase. Our next poetry open mic will be November 22nd, same time same place 💖

Jenna here with our next staff pick. I’ve chosen to highlight ✨Peacock’s Ice-Cream✨
I’ve been ordering, and thoroughly enjoying (as has Moose), this delicious ice cream for nearly 3 years now, so I’m thrilled we stock it here at Neighbourhood!
Peacock’s was started by Jennifer in the summer of 2020, a true lockdown business.
Jennifer is Canadian, and shares my intense appreciation for peanut butter, among other North American flavor combinations. As such, Peacock’s is North American style ice cream, with a custard base and *a lot* of fun mix ins (think brownies, cakes, cookie doughs, caramel + marshmallow swirls, etc.)
Jennifer makes everything from scratch, free from artificial flavorings and colors. Every two weeks she releases exciting flavors; a mix of unique new creations and old favorites, with a vegan option as well.
In short, she is an absolute ice cream genius. Pop into the shop and pick some up to understand the Peacock’s hype!

✨STAFF PICK✨

Hi! Jenna here to introduce our next staff pick (with the help of Moose, of course).
Each month or so, one of us chooses a new product to stock for a limited time.
My pick is Blanco Niño tortilla chips!
I find it kind of hard to find good tortilla chips here in comparison to back in America, so when we were asked to pick a new product, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get these in the shop. They are made in Dublin using corn tortillas, and are naturally gluten-free, vegan friendly, kosher certified, and have no artificial preservatives.
Tortilla chips are one of my favorite snacks because they are so versatile.
Have them with salsa, guacamole, or hummus, make sheet pan nachos, have them with chili, melt grated cheese over them (for what I refer to as “American chips + cheese”), or just eat them on their own! If you’d like recipe recommendations, chat with me in the shop, as I’m always happy to talk about food!
We have the lightly salted, blue corn, and chili + lime varieties in stock, so get them while they last! 😋

Last night was probably our favourite film screening yet! Super friendly folk, super tasty seasonal salads and super exciting Scottish skiing films right in time for the snow returning to our hills!

Let’s do it all again tonight. This time with a rock climbing and community film, more beers (our new fave) and vegan macaronis pies for you to enjoy.

Grab a ticket via the link in our bio.

Jumping back over to more shop related things!

This photos shows the best houmous you may eat (in classic and lime + coriander variety) which you can now find in our fridge plus it’s made in the great kingdom of Fife. And my new jumper which I got from Vinted yesterday and it’s the best thing I’ve ever owned so had to share and say if you’ve never used vinted to buy second hand clothes DO IT!

That’s all for now.

Me breathing a sign of relief after yesterdays post. I woke up with a feeling I can only compare to “the fear” after a night out feeling a little exposed after yesterdays post. But, after a day of reading through your feedback and just generally lovely comments I feel very glad that I shared what’s going on with you all.

I also had a very interesting conversation about the shame of failed businesses. I haven’t been honest with even my friends and family about the drop is custom that I’ve been seeing at the shop because honestly I did feel embarrassed. Having a shop is an extension of yourself and so it can feel very personal when it’s not going well. Since sharing with you yesterday I’m feeling a massive weight has been lifted and I’m feeling cautiously optimistic for the first time in a long time!

So THANK YOU for the encouragement and support that has come from my honest post yesterday. I’m going to take some proper time over the weekend to consider it all and properly put together a plan to give you guys exactly what you want from Neighbourhood.

Hello everyone!

After seeing the sad news that are closing down this morning I felt like writing a honest little post.

Times are TOUGH! We’re seeing business that we love and from outside appear to be very successful, closing every week. At Neighbourhood our sales are down massively from our first 1.5 years and are costs are constantly rising. We are not at a point where we need to close but we are at a point that I would like to reach and ask for support both through shopping with us and offering us some of your feedback.

Of course, everyone’s lives have changed drastically since when we opened during lockdown. We are all back to busy schedules and all facing the cost of living crisis but there are still many people who are in a position to shop in local stores and not fall on the convenience of the supermarkets and online store such as Am*zon.

Yes, sometimes small local stores can be more expensive but you are giving so much to your local area by using them plus there are so many more benefits. I will stand and listen to you tell me EVERYTHING about your life and be genuinely interested. I’ve walked dogs for customers in covid isolation, I run all of your donated tetrapacks to the polmedie recycling point once a month, I lend customers my personal possessions such a my kayak and skis because I want to share the joy of those activists with you. The list goes on and I do this not to profit from these activities but because I actually genuinely CARE. Sometimes so much it is to my detriment.

So hopefully you can pop into the store, pop us a little comment down below or send us a DM. What do you want to see in store that would encourage you to shop with us? We’re also noticing that our events have been extremely popular, we are honestly willing to try anything (we did a 3 course vegan burns supper + entertainment for 27 people without kitchen facilities just to prove it) so give us your best shot.

Thank you for reading my ramblings and thank you for your support over the last 2 years you lovely bunch!
