We always have a fantastic selection of paintings by James Somerville Lindsay in the gallery and our Summer Show is no exception.

Having spent many years living and painting in France, James always brings a Mediterranean warmth to his work - even when his subjects are Scottish. Capturing Scotland at its very best and reminding us that we do have nice days from time to time!
James also has a particular love of café and street scenes, where figures bring each canvas to life. There is a sense of quiet storytelling in every painting, inviting the viewer to imagine themselves there - sipping a drink, soaking up the atmosphere and just watching the world go by.

A true master of capturing place and mood, James’s work is always a pleasure to have in the gallery.

A quick trip round the gallery and some of our Summer Show paintings currently on display. Our Summer Show is our opportunity to showcase work from many of our artists so it’s definitely a ‘something for everyone’ exhibition. With new work continuing to come into the gallery over Summer, be sure to pop in and enjoy a fabulous and varied selection of paintings, glass, ceramics and sculpture from a wide selection of talented artists.

New to the Annan Gallery this Summer is artist Sarah Carrington who has painted a beautiful series of Iona inspired paintings (and some fantastic postcard-size paintings for our Postcard Show). Here are some images of the larger scale pieces which use various materials, including gold left, to layering surfaces to echo the weathered textures of the shoreline and the shifting qualities of light, sea and sky.

For those lucky enough to have visited Iona (on a nice day), these paintings will bring back happy memories of the white sand beaches, turquoise seas and expansive views and inspire those who haven’t been to Iona to visit.

From small to statement size, we have a fantastic selection of Cecilia Cardiff’s paintings showing in the gallery. Showcasing her trademark figurative and still life paintings where the main focus is on the food and drink, these are Summer paintings at their best. Sitting in Mediterranean Cafes, people watching and enjoying the sun, bustle and noise, these are fun but accomplished paintings that take us to happy places.

And translating perfectly to postcard size or large scale works, these are joyful celebrations of life’s simple pleasures which make Cecilia’s work impossible to pass by without a smile.

When we launched our ‘Postcards of Summer’ exhibition, it’s fair to say we weren’t expecting postcard-sized paintings from Beth Robertson Fiddes! After all, following her last almost sell-out show with us, Beth is an artist who usually paints BIG... really big…

But she embraced the challenge and the result is a stunning and rare collection of original 5 × 7 inch paintings that capture all the atmosphere, colour and impact of her larger works that have made her one of the most acclaimed contemporary landscape artists of today.

Our new format ‘Postcards of Summer’ exhibition opened at the weekend and the response has been fantastic. Inspired by summer holiday memories, we’ve gone retro with our postcard stand revolving display so you can browse through and enjoy all the fantastic small paintings we’re showing. These are collectable small pieces of art from many of our favourite artists and we hope you enjoy these pieces as much as the artists have enjoyed creating them.

Our big annual Summer Show opens tomorrow!

The gallery is filled with an incredible collection of brand-new original artworks from a fantastic range of artists, making this the perfect time to discover a piece you’ll love for years to come.
We’re also excited to launch ‘Postcards of Summer’ - a collection of over 120 original 5 × 7 inch artworks. These miniature originals are a wonderful way to start an art collection, add to an existing one, or find a unique gift.

Doors open at 10am tomorrow, and we’d love to see you in the gallery.
