Beats of War introduces Scotland’s first Black superhero, DJ E.T., an alien exile who crash-lands in Glasgow while searching for a way to save his home planet from robotic invaders. Taking on human form, he discovers not only music but also the struggles, resilience and hope of a community where he must learn what it truly means to belong. Inspired by creator Etienne Kubwabo’s own journey from the

Democratic Republic of Congo to Scotland, the story reflects themes of migration, loss, and identity. Drawing on Glasgow’s rich history and iconic landmarks such as the Clyde River, the Finnieston Crane, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the comic also explores the city’s darker past, with villains influenced by the notorious razor gangs of the 1920s and 30s. By fusing Afrofuturist storytelling with Scottish culture, Beats of War creates a bold, emotionally resonant world that is both universal and deeply personal. Since its release in 2020, the series has sold over 50,000 copies worldwide and been celebrated across media platforms, including BBC The Social, STV News, Radio Clyde and the Black Lives Matter Mural Trail. At its heart, Beats of War is a story about identity, belonging and transformation, reminding us that we are all superheroes to someone, and that stories can inspire, empower and bring hope across cultures. This is comic book company under Mile Away Films. It was created by Etienne Kubwabo.
