The Gaelic Books Council is the lead organisation with responsibility for supporting Scottish Gaelic authors and publishers, and for raising the profile and reach of Scottish Gaelic books in Scotland and internationally.

Cothrom aig Moniack Mhor Creative Writing Centre as t-samhradh, airson sgrìobhadairean steidhichte anns a' Ghàidhealtachd a tha a' sgrìobhadh ann an cànan sam bith.

🏔️ We are very excited to announce the Write Highlands Bursary!

This bursary offers fully-funded non-residential places on some of our upcoming tutored courses. It is for writers who live in the Highland Council area and may face barriers in taking part in the artform.

One place is available on each of these courses:

Lifewriting, tutored by Karen McLeod and Jarred McGinnis, guest reader Jackie Kay
🗓️ 13 – 18 July

Fiction: Starting Out, tutored by Kirsty Gunn and Kevin MacNeil, guest reader Duncan McLean
🗓️ 17 – 22 August

The Sonic World of Poems, tutored by Hanif Abdurraqib and Jen Hadfield, guest reader Rachel Sermanni
🗓️ 14 – 19 September

A selection of the Gaelic prose writings of Prof Derick Thomson (1921 – 2012). As well as being one of the most important Gaelic poets of the 20th century, Thomson, as the publisher and editor of the quarterly ‘Gairm’, shaped the development of Gaelic writing in the post-war period.

The Lost Elms, Mandy Haggith
(Headline, Non-fiction)

Pathfinding: On Walking, Motherhood and Freedom, Kerri Andrews
(Elliott and Thomson, Non-fiction)

Alex Ogilvie of the Highland Society of London and non-voting Chair of the Judging Panel said, “The panel had some very difficult decisions to make to get to the shortlist, which is testament to the range and skill demonstrated by each of the longlisted titles. It is an ongoing pleasure and a privilege to bring attention to the exceptionally fine work being produced across the Highlands and Islands, and I would like to extend warm congratulations to all four authors shortlisted for this year’s prize.”

The shortlist was selected by a judging panel: Jen Hadfield, poet and essayist, and winner of the 2024 Windham Campbell Prize; acclaimed multi-award winning fiction writer Cynan Jones; and Peter Mackay, poet, lecturer and broadcaster, and Scotland’s current Makar (national poet).
