There is something wonderfully timeless about this Pedestal Bowl by Bay Studio Ceramics! Its organic form and earthy surface have the feeling of an ancient relic, while the fresh sheen of the layered “Alga” glaze catches the light beautifully, bringing a sense of softness and movement to the piece.

Jean Bay Frazer created this new body of work as an opportunity to “𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚔 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚊 𝚏𝚒𝚡𝚎𝚍 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚗 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚘 𝚏𝚘𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚠 𝚒𝚗𝚝𝚞𝚒𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗 𝚏𝚞𝚗𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗”, allowing “𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚌𝚕𝚊𝚢 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚖𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚖𝚢 𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚐𝚞𝚒𝚍𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚌𝚎𝚜𝚜”.
You can feel that sense of freedom in each piece. The green glaze flows across the surface, revealing subtle changes in texture, hue and light, giving every vessel its own character.

For Ellis O’Connor, ‘Earth in Motion’ is a significant work within her exhibition, Landscapes of Becoming. Inspired by memories of walking through the vast, vibrant rainforests she encountered during her recent travels through New Zealand, this painting captures “𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙩”, bringing that wonderful feeling of being surrounded by an immense, intensely alive landscape to the canvas.

Rich with expressive layers that shift in the changing light, ‘Earth in Motion’ reveals more details the longer you spend with it. Ellis describes it as “𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨”, reflecting landscapes that felt “𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖 𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙧”.

We love seeing Jean Bay Frazer’s beautiful, one of a kind ceramics alongside Ellis O’Connor’s atmospheric paintings.

Both artists are inspired by landscape and follow an intuitive approach to making, allowing each piece to evolve naturally through the process. Together, they create a running conversation across mediums, where form, colour and landscape meet in unexpected ways.

Although Scotland and New Zealand share many similarities, it was the intensity of New Zealand’s colours and light that stayed with Ellis long after she returned home 🌻

Rather than consciously changing her palette, those experiences naturally found their way into her paintings. The result is a collection full of luminous colour, expressive movement and an incredible sense of atmosphere!

𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘆.
These one-of-a-kind pieces were created during a recent transformative time in Jean’s life as she prepared for motherhood. Stepping away from the repetition of making tableware, she allowed herself the freedom to create intuitively, with each piece taking shape naturally in her hands. The result is a celebration of creativity, individuality and the joy of the making process.

🌻Created during a period of travel, change and creative growth, this new body of work reflects Ellis’ belief that art should never stand still. Inspired by her recent travels to New Zealand, each painting has evolved organically, embracing new colours, light and atmosphere along the way.

Ellis O’Connor’s solo exhibition, 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴, opens this Saturday, 1st August.

𝗪𝗲’𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝟭𝟭𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮𝗽𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗘𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

Ellis’ paintings are accompanied by ceramics from Bay Studio Ceramics, creating a thoughtful dialogue across mediums. Together, the works explore themes of change, transition, and our evolving relationship with the natural world.
