Barely three days after our wedding, my husband sent the dining table flying with one brutal k:ick because lunch was served a little late. Then he shouted, “A woman has to be h:it before she learns her place!” I couldn't help laughing. I looked him straight in the eye and replied, “In that case... the gloves are off.”
Exactly seventy-two hours after we signed our marriage certificate, my husband's charming act completely fell apart.
That Tuesday evening, I got home almost an hour late after battling torrential rain and bumper-to-bumper traffic. The moment I walked into the bright condo I had spent years working myself to exhaustion to buy long before I ever met him, I rushed straight into the kitchen. Gregory had an almost military obsession with meals being served exactly on time. Still, when I carried the steaming dishes of slow-cooked pot roast to the dining table, the tension hanging in the room felt suffocating.
Gregory was stretched across the sofa, endlessly scrolling through his phone, his entire body radiating cold hostility.
“Dinner's ready, honey,” I called gently.
Instead of thanking me, Gregory sprang to his feet.
There was something in his eyes I had never seen before.
Pure, uncontrollable fury.
He stormed toward the dining table and, without saying another word, slammed the sole of his dress shoe into the heavy oak table.
C:rash!
The entire table lurched violently.
Porcelain plates exploded across the floor.
The dinner I had worked so hard to prepare scattered everywhere in a greasy mess.
I froze where I stood.
Gregory marched right up to me and shoved a finger inches from my face.
“You obviously have no idea what a wife is supposed to be!” he bellowed. “We've been married for three days, and you're already showing how lazy you are. Starting tomorrow, every debit card and every online banking password belongs to me. You'll be up at five every morning cooking, and after your little office job, you'll come home and serve me. Do you understand?”
Then he stepped even closer.
“A stubborn wife needs to be properly 'disciplined' before she learns how to obey.”
He expected me to cry.
He expected me to beg.
Instead, an overwhelming calm settled over me, the kind that had been forged through countless brutal hours long before Gregory ever entered my life.
I slowly bent down and picked up one of the razor-sharp shards from a shattered plate.
Turning the piece of porcelain lazily between my fingers, I looked directly into his furious eyes.
A slow smile spread across my face.
“So,” I said quietly, my voice almost unnaturally calm, “you think a wife needs discipline.”
I tilted my head slightly.
“Tell me something, Gregory... exactly how were you planning to do that?”
His expression flickered with uncertainty, but his arrogance quickly drowned it out.
He muttered a vulgar curse, planted his feet, lifted his right hand high into the air, and swung it toward me, fully convinced this was the moment he would establish control.
What Gregory didn't know was that the quiet, soft-spoken financial analyst standing in front of him wasn't nearly as helpless as she looked.
She had been hiding a secret powerful enough to destr0y him.
And he was less than two seconds away from discovering it........... Don't stop at the best part! Facebook limits long stories, so switch "Most Relevant" to "All Comments" and continue reading below.
