☀️ THE FORGOTTEN MIDSUMMER – DAY 1 ☀️
Did People Really Celebrate Litha?

Every June, social media fills with posts wishing everyone a "Happy Litha."

But here's a question that might surprise you...

Did our ancestors ever call it Litha?

The answer is... probably not.

The name Litha comes from the writings of the 8th-century Anglo-Saxon monk Bede, who recorded the names Ærra Līða ("Before Litha") and Æftera Līða ("After Litha") as names for the months surrounding midsummer.

What Bede didn't describe was a widespread pagan festival called Litha.

Across Britain and Ireland, midsummer traditions varied enormously from village to village. Some communities lit great bonfires, others gathered healing herbs before sunrise, some celebrated with feasting and music, while others believed it was a dangerous night when fairies and spirits roamed freely.

There was no single, universal celebration.

The modern festival we know as Litha is largely a product of reconstruction—drawing together historical sources, folklore, archaeology and contemporary pagan practice into a meaningful seasonal observance.

That doesn't make it any less valid.

Traditions evolve. Names change. Meanings grow.

Perhaps the most important question isn't whether our ancestors used the word Litha...

But whether celebrating the turning of the seasons still helps us reconnect with the land beneath our feet.

🖤 History doesn't always give us certainty—but it does invite us to ask better questions.

So here's one to think about:

If our ancestors never called it Litha… does the name really matter?

Long before social media witches, crystal grids, and moon water, people across Britain and Ireland were creating something far stranger...

Witch Bottles.

These were not used to cast spells.

They were used for 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, witch bottles were hidden beneath hearths, buried under doorways, concealed in walls, and placed beneath floors to protect homes from curses, evil spirits, and malicious magic.

What was inside them?

🪡 Bent pins
🧷 Needles
🔩 Nails
💇 Hair
✂️ Nail clippings

And perhaps most surprisingly...

⚱️ Human urine.

People believed that by placing personal items inside the bottle, any harmful magic directed at them would become trapped, reflected, or broken.

Archaeologists have discovered genuine witch bottles hidden inside houses throughout Britain, some containing hundreds of pins and still sealed centuries later.

These weren't fantasy objects.

They were real protective charms created by ordinary people who genuinely feared supernatural harm.

Whether you believe in magic or not, witch bottles offer a fascinating glimpse into the fears, beliefs, and folklore of our ancestors.

🌙🖤 THE FORGOTTEN SKILL OF THE OLD WITCHES 🖤🌙

Modern witchcraft often focuses on doing.

Casting.
Manifesting.
Creating.
Charging.
Calling.

But many traditional practitioners spent more time listening than speaking.

Listening to:

🍃 The wind
🍃 The birds
🍃 Dreams
🍃 Omens
🍃 The seasons
🍃 Their own intuition

The old witch was often an observer first and a magician second.

Before asking:

"What spell should I do?"

Try asking:

"What am I being shown?"

Magic often becomes clearer when we stop trying to force answers and start paying attention to whispers.

🛤️🌙 THE MAGIC OF CROSSROADS 🌙🛤️

Crossroads appear in magical traditions all over the world.

Why?

Because they are places "between."

Not one road.
Not the other.

A meeting point of possibilities.

In folklore, crossroads were believed to be places where:

✨ Spirits gathered
✨ Oaths were made
✨ Divination became stronger
✨ Magical tools were buried
✨ Offerings were left

The power came from standing at a place where multiple futures could unfold.

Many witches still see crossroads as symbols of transformation.

When life places you at a crossroads...

Perhaps that is where the deepest magic begins., graphic for this please

🐈‍⬛🖤 THE ORIGINAL FAMILIAR 🖤🐈‍⬛

Most people think of a familiar as a black cat.

Historically, the idea was often much stranger.

In old folklore, familiars could appear as:

🖤 Cats
🖤 Toads
🖤 Hares
🖤 Birds
🖤 Insects
🖤 Even invisible presences

Some traditions believed familiars were spirit allies rather than physical animals.

Their purpose was often to:

✨ Carry messages
✨ Protect the practitioner
✨ Aid in divination
✨ Warn of danger
✨ Strengthen magical work

In many folk traditions, a familiar wasn't simply a pet.

It was believed to be a companion spirit, a helper that appeared when needed, sometimes taking the form of an animal and sometimes appearing only in dreams, signs, or intuition.

Many modern witches speak of feeling guided by recurring animals, symbols, dreams, or energies that seem to cross their path again and again.

Perhaps the question isn't:

"Do I have a familiar?"

But rather:

"What keeps showing up in my path?"

🐾 Speaking of familiars...

Have you met our resident familiar Mojito? 🖤

Mojito can often be found supervising the shop, inspecting stock, accepting admiration from visitors, and generally ensuring magical standards are maintained.

If you're calling in on a Monday, keep an eye out for her—you may just be lucky enough to receive a familiar's approval. 🐈‍⬛✨

🌙 Have you ever felt a special connection to a particular animal?
