We read with interest the recent news story about Big Tech companies buying up thousands of rare second hand books so they can be scanned to feed Ai engines and are then destroyed. They call it Data Acquisition. Aside from the questionable ethics of taking copyrighted material without consent, we feel it highlights the real value of books.

As we increasingly rely on Ai to drive search engines and provide us with facts and knowledge it’s worth remembering that search engines don’t have access to all the knowledge in the world. At least not yet! So much of the fruit of human ingenuity and curiosity is lying dormant inside books. 

Do you want to learn something new or do a deeper dive into a subject that interests you? Once you’ve read the Wikipedia page why not use your very own search engines (your hands and feet) and pop into one of your local data centres (eg our bookshop) and see what you can find. For just a few quid you can do your very own data acquisition.

Saddened to hear of the death of Dolly Parton. Here in the UK her Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library UK has gifted over 7 million books to children who otherwise might not have access. Globally the programme has reached even more. An incredible legacy for someone who grew up in poverty and truly appreciated the value of books.

Our 1980s look back continues with this pair of books. A biography of Margaret Thatcher and the controversial book she banned! The memoir by a former intelligence officer was a worldwide publishing sensation. Probably because it was banned in England everyone wanted to read it. We still don’t know the full story. As recently as 2023 the government are still blocking the release of papers relating to the Spycatcher saga, long after the 30 year rule. Despite the ban we have a copy for sale here in the bookshop!

We’re on an 1980s nostalgia kick. Great music in that decade. Here’s a selection of books we have in stock. (Swipe left)

1) U2 were one of the biggest bands the decade. After a slow start it was their appearance at Live Aid in 1985 that provided a vital moment (before even knew what that was) and they were suddenly HUGE.

2) Duran Duran bass player John Taylor certainly led a colourful life during the height of their fame. This memoir covers his time in that legendary 80s band.

3) Bob Geldof’s book charts his unlikely journey from post punk pub rock singer to global political figure. It’s a fascinating story of how a rock n roller tried to stop a famine.

4) Chuck D was one of the foremost lyricists of the 80s. His band Public Enemy were the first really heavily political rap band. This short book examines his work and why it still matters today
