While most of the time we find fossils loose on the beach, there are occasions, like when the Yeo family found this beautiful Sea Urchin, that you can benefit from a rock hammer and (this is the crucial bit) someone who knows what they are doing with them!
With James as their guide, the urchin was extracted in one piece making a beautiful find to take home!
You won’t need to bring a hammer on our fossil hunts, but if you do ever take a hammer fossil hunting, ensure you have the correct hammer, appropriate safety gear, and the knowledge to use them without damaging precious fossils. Our guides have all been saddened to see damage done to fossils through the misuse of hammers!
The best thing to do is head down with guides like ours who know the local beaches, know the best places to find fossils, and know when (and when not) to use a hammer!
