A lovely last class of Month of Sewing last night with Emma, Roopa & Angela.

Emma set the sleeves into her navy print dress & then finished the green & gold lurex viscose one. She sewed wide around the neckline facing to keep it in place, taking care in pressing & pinning so it fit well. She had to unpick one small section to improve it but it was worth it. Then she hemmed the dress & it was done.

Roopa found she was missing a sleeve when she went to sew them into her theboldone_ Fredy/Rossi dress & had no more fabric to cut another one, so she sewed up the dress as sleeveless. She sewed the armholes with the burrito method & pulled the back of the dress through the shoulders. Then she closed up the side seams, around the pockets & the lining all in two long seams. Roopa changed the overlocker to her fun variegated threads & overlocked the last raw edges.

Angela continued with her Merchant & Mills Sanda jacket, getting all the last pieces sewn together. Angela sewed the collar, turned it right side out & topstitched around the edge. She pinned & sewed it to the neckline of the jacket. The layers are getting bulkier so we reduced the presser foot pressure on the sewing machine. Once the collar was in, Angela pinned & sewed the neckline facing in. Then she sewed the hems on the facings & pressed the hem across the rest of the jacket. She topstitched the hem & around the fronts of the jacket. Angela tried on the jacket to check the sleeve length & decided to trim some length off, overlocking the raw edges to stop the fraying.

side of the lining pieces. It was a workout to turn it through to the right side but we both did a little jump for joy at the clean finish.

Julie wanted some help with a shirt she’s sewing up, believing the armhole to be too small. She sewed up a sleeve & set it into the armhole, easing it in over the sleevehead. She tried on the shirt again & found it was comfortable now that the armhole is bigger with the sleeve sewn in. She can carry on with that at home. Next Julie wanted to adjust a new pair of trousers, adding a little width to the centre back for elastic in the waistband. She didn’t like the huge patch pockets so we removed them to use for the inset & Julie unpicked the centre back seam. We cut a triangle & she tacked it in by machine, nailing the bottom of the v perfectly. Julie can add pieces into the waistband & reconstruct the trousers again.

Learn to crochet!

Join our fabulous teacher Bex thepigeonsnest to learn to crochet. Over two Friday evenings, plus access-anytime video content, you will learn how to crochet granny squares & turn them into a beautiful cowl. The class includes the full kit in either teal or pink and full step-by-step videos to follow anytime. We love that people come to the second class feeling so excited with their new crochet skills & ready to show off the squares they’ve been stitching up.

Next class is on 2nd & 9th October, 6.30 - 8.30pm & we have spaces available, book on the website or pop into the shop to book.

Then Bex is teaching amigurumi crochet toadstools on 30th October. This is a perfect follow on from Bex’s beginner classes to learn the skills to make any of those cute 3D crocheted objects. Including Bex’s Froggo!

Three fabulous pairs of PJ trousers made in class today by Marissa, Caroline & Charlotte. After selecting fabrics, they learned how to use their measurements to adjust the pattern for their chosen fit - everyone added length for rolled up hems. Then they pinned, cut & sewed their way to brilliant pairs of trousers, learning pressing skills along the way. Marissa used the roll end of a fun turquoise stripe cotton & Caroline chose one of our new cottons - Purple Paisley Cotton. Charlotte picked Pastel Shooting Stars on Navy Cotton Poplin - both those last two fabrics are still available to buy. They’ve all taken a copy of the pattern so they can sew up more trousers - we can’t wait to see their next pairs.

This class is the third of our beginners classes, following Introduction to Machine Sewing & Sew A Tote Bag, all designed to develop your confidence & skills in sewing clothes.

We ran our first Sew A Best Bog Coat Class today & look at the amazing bog coats that Pippa, Julie & Sonia made! We are as pleased as they are with how the day went & how brilliant all their finished coats look. Everyone followed through the brand new instructions I’ve drawn up & even made a little bog coat in paper to understand the measurements & the way to fold the rectangle of fabric to create a coat.

Pippa chose one of our denim fabrics for her coat, which was a bit tough in places to wrangle but so worth it for the classic finished look. Julie picked Purple Fleck Diamonds Coating fabric for her coat, a chunky weight to sew but pretty well behaved. It really benefitted from overlocking on the fraying raw edges. Sonia chose our Raspberry Pink Double Crepe for her coat, which was a great balance of weighty & malleable. We love all these choices & it’s so fun seeing how they’ve turn out.

A lovely Month of Sewing Class last night with Emma, Roopa & Tori.

Emma had cut out her faithful dress pattern in Dancing Skeletons Amongst the Flowers polycotton so she started sewing it up. She sewed the shoulders, finished the neckline facing & sewed the hem. For the sleeves, Emma chose a gingham bias binding to bind over the raw edge, it looks really cute. She sewed the sleeves ready to insert.

Roopa had sewn all the princess seams for her theboldone_ Freddie/Rossie Wrap dress, ready to sew the shoulders together but had found that the front & back shoulders on the dress did not match up. The many options in this pattern can cause confusion. But Roopa had cut the correct facing pieces so we used that as a guide to trim down the back neckline of the dress so the shoulders would fit together. Once that was sorted, Roopa sewed the facing at the neckline, bravely snipped into the four corners & began understitching each side.

Tori finished sewing the neckline on her Vogue dress. She sewed the understitching on the first side, then sewed the bias to the second side, being careful to finish both ends right at the v she cut last time. She trimmed & understitched the seam allowances & then pressed both sides into place at the back of the neckline, pinning ready to sew. Tori sewed the bias facings down, keeping a steady seam allowance all the way around. It looks beautiful.

A lovely Open sewing class today with Jan, Eileen & Glenis.

Jan finished her lovely summery dress just in time for a sunny picture. She sewed in the invisible zip, which was a bit of a trial. But she persevered through misalignment & sewing over the teeth until it was beautiful - well done Jan. She finished the facings over the zip at the back & then pressed & sewed the hem.

Eileen finished the neckline of her viscose dress with bias binding, avoiding doing the fiddly collar. Once the front facings were sewn, she chose buttons & learned how to sew buttonholes. After a few practice goes, she sewed 4 perfect buttonholes in the bodice & opened them with the buttonhole chisel. Eileen sewed up the side seams & then sewed the gathering stitches over the head of the sleeves that she had already sewn up. Eileen pinned & sewed one sleeve in, needing to correct just two little tucks. Viscose is a tricky fabric to sew but we love that swish.

Glenis sewed the princess seams on her theboldone_ Freddie/Rossie Wrap Dress. She learned how to ease the opposing curves together & only had to fix a single little tuck. Glenis overlocked the raw edges of the seams & the bottom edge of the facing pieces too. After sewing the shoulder seams on both dress & facings, she pinned & sewed the facing into the dress.

A busy Open Sewing Class to kick off the week, with Lucy, Ali & June.

Lucy is sewing a shirt & wanted help with the tower plackets on the sleeves. We followed the instructions & she sewed them beautifully. Lucy then sewed the pleats alongside the plackets, ready for the cuffs. Next she tackled the bust darts, wanting to check if they would be in the right place for her. We pinned them in & she tried on the shirt, seeing that the dart looked good. Lucy sewed both darts & then pinned & sewed a sleeve in flat.

Ali is making the Merchant & Mills Nevis skirt with fabrics from them too. Ali cut & fused interfacing to one side of the waistband & then sewed the layers together around the shaped ends. She layered the seam allowances & pressed before turning out the right way. That was a workout with the very structured fabric but we managed it & Ali pressed it once more. She clipped it to the skirt as pins were hard work & sewed the seam. Finally, Ali prepared & sewed the last seam to close up the waistband with the skirt seam allowances inside.

June sewed the final pleats on her skirt & then sewed the waistband on. She sewed up the lining seams & then attached the lining to the waistband too. June pressed strips of interfacing to the skirt & then sewed in an invisible zip.
