Ever heard of Vavilovian mimicry?

Vavilovian mimicry is an evolutionary process in which w**ds evolve to resemble domesticated crops. This remarkable adaptation allowed the w**d Echinochloa crus-galli to survive among rice crops. The plant somehow “learned” that each year farmers would remove it, allowing the rice to thrive. Through Vavilovian mimicry, the w**d gradually came to resemble rice in appearance and growth, tricking farmers and surviving removal. Essentially, it is survival by disguise.

What a fantastic turnout we had for Sunday’s Plant Health and Diagnosis Day at the East Point Pavilion. Thank you so much to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable afternoon.

To give you a snapshot of the day, we repotted Philodendrons in a bid to rescue them from root rot, took a very brave cutting from an Aglaonema in a last-ditch attempt to save it (full honesty, I’m cautiously optimistic!😉), and identified propagation points on what might be the biggest and healthiest cheese plant I’ve ever seen.

But most importantly, we laughed, chatted, and shared. The day was about far more than plants, it was about connection.

Thank you again for being part of it. Let’s do it all again this Sunday. The shop will be open from 11am to 2pm, and I can’t wait to see you there 🌱

Because our houseplants are tropical, things like central heating, drafts, and temperature changes can be stressful for them. With a little care and attention (and teamwork!), we can help them stay healthy and happy 🌿

You’re welcome to show me a photo—or even bring your plant along (just keep the outside temperature in mind, as they won’t thank you for a chilly trip out of their warm home). We can chat about the best time to repot, why leaves might be turning yellow or dropping, or you can simply show off your botanical achievements and teach me a thing or two!

They’ve arrived—the unmistakable sign that the seasons are changing! As the last of the unsold pumpkins are tossed out the back door, a vibrant wave of Christmas Poinsettias bursts onto the scene, filling the shelves with their festive cheer. But why are we treating these plants as disposbable? With a little care and knowledge there's no reason why you can't continue to grow your Poinsettia, year after year!

Poinsettia – Euphorbia pulcherrima Every year, around eight million red-leaved poinsettias are sold at Christmas in the UK alone. They’re also the top-selling houseplant in the United States, where their economic significance is so great that they even have their own day — National Poinsettia ...
