We remember roads we never walked, houses we never entered, kingdoms that never were.

Before the legend, before the record, before anyone knew what it would become — there was simply “The New Play by Agatha Christie.”

A scarce original issue of the 1952 Ambassadors Theatre programme for The Mousetrap, from the opening West End production. Wonderfully, the name of the play doesn’t even appear on the cover.

Directed by Peter Cotes, with the original cast including Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim, and still bearing its original sixpence price.

On 25 November 1952 the curtain rose. More than seventy years later, it still hasn’t really come down.

A rather perfect survivor for Agatha Christie Day.

And, of course, we still won’t tell you whodunnit.

Andrew Lang’s ‘The Orange Fairy Book”, 1906.

A rather special arrival on my desk.

Collectors know that the true rarity lies in the original dust wrapper. Edwardian dust wrappers were never intended to last, and examples like this seldom appear on the market today. Beneath the wrapper are beautifully preserved gilt-decorated boards, remarkably bright and unfaded after well over a century. The accompanying photographs highlight H. J. Ford’s enchanting colour plates, illustrating why Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books remain among the most celebrated works of children’s literature.

A remarkable survivor from the golden age of illustrated children’s books.
