Behind all our products are real people. Not faceless factories, but artisans, authors and artists. We know them. They come into see us. They drop off the wonderful products they made and they sign the books they wrote. This week we have seen and plus and The publisher of who is Dave from usually drops off her books when we need a few more. Some even send their husbands if they’re too busy dealing with “life” (usually small children). We regularly see the husband of When the team tell you about who made the beautiful mug you want to take home or about who wrote the book you can’t wait to read, or the person behind the artwork that you know will evoke memories of your time in the Lake District, it’s not “sales puff”, it’s a genuine enthusiasm for the people behind the displays on the shelves. These wonderful creatives are the community behind the Gather. was out hiking with earlier this week, getting inspiration for her next painting. For a retailer, it’s much easier to buy lots of product from one distributor, where the product is shipped in on a pallet from overseas. You deal with one sales person, you make one order and you pay one invoice. Our process of working with lots of people is far more involved and time consuming. But we wouldn’t have it any other way and we think that’s what makes the Gather feel special to our visitors. When you comment on that wonderful smell from the diffuser it’s not any smell - it’s Kate’s creation and her blend of essential oils (Kate is ) or it’s Gareth and Claire’s blend of essential oils (they are the faces behind ) If you ever want to know about the provenance of our products, just ask. The team love to share the stories of their creators. 😍

The end of Grasmere is currently a carpet of bluebells and in the still mornings the smell is amazing. We often get comments that the Grasmere Gather smells wonderful and we have to thank for that. Kate (the person behind Bous) makes everything in small batches. Every item is hand poured and she develops all the fragrances in house using the finest essential oils. Our team all have different favourites so she must be doing something right and appealing to different tastes. If you’re visiting the Lake District this weekend make sure to see the bluebells and then come and visit us and enjoy some other wonderful scents courtesy of Kate. We can’t promise sunshine, we can promise other lovely ways to treat your senses if you’re in the area.

We LOVE lambs. It’s a really busy time for farmers in the valley, but for the rest of us it slows all walks down to “stop and watch”. The end products from last year’s shearing are starting to arrive on the shop floor. There’s more to come, including Herdwick knitting wool and weaving yarn and Herdwick tweed - making everything from scratch down the road in Yorkshire takes time. It’s pretty special knowing the farm where that crafting yarn and those Herdwick baubles originated and knowing who made the baubles and created the skeins and out on the belly bands. It’s one of the pleasures of working directly with the Herdwick farmers at every step of the process. The Lake District is a working landscape and we love being a part of that 😍

Specialty honey goes with everything. With your tea in the morning (we are loving our morning brew in one of our exclusive designed Grasmere mugs) and of course on your toast. Perhaps with the yogurt on your granola (if you haven’t tried granola yet it’s completely addictive) and definitely with some cheese at lunchtime. Plus it forms part of many desserts. It’s versatile and delicious and at this time of year it’s such fun seeing the bees being busy. We eat it by the (catering) bucket load (Thankyou and for keeping me supplied - it fuels my training and racing 😍)

There’s nothing like sunshine and spring flowers in the Lake District. It’s transformative. There’s also nothing like a beautiful new range on the shop floor that captures the scent of summer. 100% sourced and made in the UK (so perfect for us) and we’re huge fans of the packaging too. 😍 The perfect gift or the perfect way to bring a little bit of summer into your own home.

We’re done with Easter Eggs and it’s not even 9am, so here’s a fun Easter connection for you. Grasmere is famous for being home of William Wordsworth and he is buried opposite us in St Oswald’s churchyard, along with several family members. BUT did you know it was his nephew that started the Boat Race? The Boat Race is close to the hearts of all of us at the Gather, with dark blue and light blue representation across the generations. Yesterday’s race saw us all at the Thames. Next year is the centenary edition of the women’s race and with Chanel sponsorship, Le Chameau boots and student athletes that include current and former Olympians plus media everywhere, it has come on a long way. Wordsworth gave us Daffodils and literature and put Grasmere on the world stage, but his family gave us one of the UK’s heritage events and has similar global reach - we love this connection. Happy Easter everyone 🐣🧆 (and if you missed it; here is the first Oxford women’s crew to win since 2016 arriving to race).

So nearly Easter and in our house that means (more) chocolate as usual. But, living in the Lake District where spring happens later and more gradually (and you still need a woolly hat and gloves most days), lambs and daffodils are starting to be in evidence and the spring colours are beginning to make a difference. There is even a touch of green on some trees. We love reflecting the seasons in the colours in store. We’re lucky that each season is marked and colourful and because our creative suppliers are also inspired by what is happening around them we tend to have products we can use to do that. So - whether you celebrate Easter with chocolate 🙋🏻‍♀️, hand knitted animals to remind everyone of new spring life (we do love a lamb and a bunny) sustainable ceramics, or a card and some everlasting copper flowers - we try to ensure we have something for everyone. Almost (!) the Easter weekend. Happy holidays to our Grasmere visitors.

The snow was back today and the valley was looking moody. The Gather was full of people sheltering from the torrential spring showers and the local Herdwicks decided that foraging in the garden was a whole lot easier than being blown around and getting cold feet higher up 😂 it is spring - honestly - we now have daffodils and we saw our first Herdwick lambs today 😍

We went to catch a backyard ultra this morning and came across these ladies out doing their morning “training”. In true “ultra” style when they spot the photographer and realise they’re on camera they break into a run - only to slow to a walk the minute the think they’re no longer being filmed. We’ve all been there 😂 We do love our Herdwicks at the Gather 😍

They’ve always been popular, but with Peaky Blinders back on screen, our Baker Boy caps are more popular than ever. 100% British in every way and remarkably waterproof like the Herdwick sheep that provide the fleeces for us. And if you prefer a flat cap - we have those too. It’s a long process making a cap. We start by collecting and sorting the fleeces to make sure we have the “light” and “dark” differentiation we need - or we won’t end up with undyed yarn that can be woven to create a “pattern”. The fleeces are then scoured (washed), combed, spun into worsted yarn and finally woven. All this takes place within 2 hours drive of Grasmere. The cloth is then sent to one of the oldest hat makers in the UK and they come back to us as the perfect cap. They are by definition limited editions. The fleeces are never the exact same colour year on year and so the finished tweed will always be a yearly “vintage”. The 2026 scoured wool is ready for spinning, but it will be a few months yet (and maybe 2027) before we have our more stock of caps. So if you want to channel your inner Peaky Blinder (and we’re fan girls of Cillian Murphy here at the Gather) come and try on a cap before they disappear and see where it takes you 😍
