Happy International Woman's Day from us :)
During the 'witch' trials in the UK, more than 90% of those accused and deceased were woman. Many, many of these woman were not witches. Many were simply older, childless woman who were seen as being different to societal norms, therefor easier to put blame on things which went wrong. Scapegoats, outcasts, different.
I listened to a very interesting podcast episode recently which explains how in parts of the UK where people believed in Fae folk, there were much less people accused of witchcraft. People had someone else to blame for their misfortune, failing crops and hardship and therefor put less blame on woman and outcasts - because they blamed the Fae instead.
It's a very interesting listen for anyone interested, but please be advised that it's recommended for ages 16+ (Episode 12)
