At exactly 5pm on 30 July, William and Carol stood together over the anvil at the Famous Blacksmiths Shop, 60 years to the minute since they were married.

Now in their 80s, they travelled from California to mark the occasion with a handfasting ceremony, just the two of them.

Gretna Green holds a special place in their family’s story. William was born in Edinburgh, his parents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary here, William and Carol returned for their 50th anniversary, and their son marked his 20th wedding anniversary here too.

Having shared so many family milestones with us, this visit was especially meaningful, as William and Carol felt it might be their last.

Across three generations, Gretna Green has been the place their family returns to celebrate enduring love.

Gather your team and pull together for a great cause! 💪

As part of this year's Gretna Green Shortbread Festival, we're hosting a Charity Tug o’ War on Saturday 29 August at 2pm, raising funds for the John Hampson MND Research & Support Fund.

Gather a team of 8 and take on the challenge! Mixed teams are welcome, with a £5 donation per person, payable when registering. All participants must be aged 18 or over.

Every penny raised will be matched by Gretna Green Ltd, doubling your team's contribution to this incredibly important cause. ❤️
