RSD......where to start!?
This was my 14th year of taking part, the music selling industry 14 years ago was very different to today. RSD was a welcome boost both for publicity and generating interest and sales. Fast forward to this year and the day has it's problems no doubts. It needs to change, but i cannot see that change happening anytime soon, which is a shame and was part of the reason i nearly stopped taking part this year. Just being honest here folks, and those customers and friends because some are both, know that i wear my heart on my sleeve.
I decided to take part again, but to make it work, i had to change how we would do things. Not how the day is run, i think we do a great job running the day and the many online and face to face comments we receive every year confirms that we must be running the day as best we can. Thank you all for your kind words.
What had to change is my perception of what we would sell on the day. So this year more than any other i put it out on here that i would be taking requests. Some folks (more than i thought!) believed i was letting them 'order' items and that these items were guaranteed for them, that caused me a real headache having to explain the rules repeatedly. I ticked off every request against the RSD stocklist and i put my faith in you all to turn up on the day to hopefully purchase your request (nothing guaranteed).
RSD is one day, one day that does not look like any other day in the 52 weeks of the year that we are open. We sell artists on this one day that we do not have the customers for any other day of the year, that's a reality a lot of stores like mine face every RSD. RSD is a gamble and it can be and in previous years has been a very expensive gamble. There is no sale or return, it's my money being spent on stock that might not sell, getting the orders correct is a stressful, time consuming gamble.
So this year, more than any other year, i let you all help me get the ordering correct. I ordered artists and formats that on any other day of the year i wouldn't touch. I gambled on you all more than any other year......and do you know what.......you all paid me back in spades!!
I couldn't get every item or some of the quantities i wanted, that's one of the problems of the day, dealing with more than 15 different companies to get stock. The record companies are allowed to give preferential treatment to stores that spend more with them throughout the year, but as a store on the day i cannot do the same to my regular customers, that's one of many changes that are needed. I did my best to get what you wanted/requested.
In the end, i actually have spent less money this year than in the previous years, but look at my leftover list, less than 25 items out of over 400!
THANK YOU ALL!
For turning up,
For restoring my faith in the day.
For helping me change for the day.
For scaring me by ordering artists that only sell on RSD.
For making this years RSD the most successful one ever!
We have 24 items left on the list, dare i dream of a sell out??
If there is something on the list you want, feel free to message and i'll reserve it, we are back open as normal from Tuesday.
