I was 7 months pregnant, this day 20 years ago and visiting my parents with my 2year old, when we received a call from my husband telling us to turn on the television. From then all I can remember is silence.

My response to the horror of 9/11 is not important in itself: I did not loose a loved one, but in a wider context it is - the perpetrators wished the whole of Western Civilisation to collapse in fear.

By the time my 2nd daughter was born, troops were in Afghanistan, they have been there her whole life. There must be many girls in Afghanistan, like Isobel, who have lived a life without Taliban. Now we have left those girls and Mothers to fight alone.

My prayers today are with those whose loved ones perished in 9/11, our daughters and the daughters of Afghanistan.

May the future bring us peace and voice. Emma

Women's Football 1918 at the family firm.

Car envy...my Father aged 2 years. The caption reads 'Clive with his new Toot Toot 1930'

Sorting through old photos can reveal some gems. Dad was an excellent driver and in his time drove motorbikes, army trucks when required and legend has is, the occasional tank on Salisbury Plain...guess this photo proves he started young!

Legend has it that my Grandfather drove racing cars at Booklands, Weybridge. I have no idea as to the veracity of this. They lived close by, so he most certainly drove cars in Weybridge somewhere!

I love this photo because it is of my dear Father but also it is so much of its time. I wonder what happened to that glorious car....

Anti-Cyclonic Gloom...

According to BBC Weather Forecast most of the UK is under Anti-Cyclonic Gloom and will be for another week. Apparently a area of High-pressure is holding thick cloud in place - marvellous - bringing daylight levels more akin to midwinter .

This is what ACG looks like over the fields of Surrey - gloomy!

However, with so very much true tragedy in the world, this is a very little burden, more of an interesting side-step into meteorological terminology. Still, useless for taking stock photos hence the recent rather 'matt' nature of pics.

Wonderfully decorative piece from a famous Doulton artist.

This super plate must have been carefully kept all its life as it is in pristine condition. It is by the Royal Doulton artist Percy Curnock. He was one of Doulton's most famous flower painters and worked for them for almost 70 years, having been employed at the age of 13 years as an apprentice modeller.

Curnock was known particularly for his rose painting and received an M.B.E. from the (then), Queen Mother in 1954, in recognition of his long and esteemed career. The Queen Mother was famous for her love of roses and Curnock created a line of homeware called Glamis Castle, a castle owned by her.

This plate has wonderful hand-painted Rose and Morning Glory, the depth of colour is lovely. Printed ouline. The deep cream border is decorated with a raised foliate design and generously gilded gadrooned edge, all in fine condition.

Condition: excellent in all aspects.

Can you name those colours? I've been sorting through some old family photographs and I think these were taken by my Father as a young man, perhaps in the 1940s?

An inscription to rear merely reads 'Midhurst' and that of the picnicers reads 'The Midhurst Crowd'. Could it be racing at Cowdray? There is also an appealing Pekingese whose identity is lost in the mists of time....

If any one can add any more information to the photos, I'd be very glad to hear.
