Fashion has changed, but have our values? Oxfam's first State of Style report explores how Britain's shopping habits are reshaping our relationship with clothing, and the hidden environmental and social costs of buying more and wearing less. Focusing on water, we examine fashion's impact on people and the planet – and what a different future could look like.

Key findings from Oxfam's State of Style report:

💻 Almost two thirds of people (64%) buy clothing they weren't actively looking for, after seeing items on social media, apps or online shopping platforms.

⏱️ A third spend less than 10 minutes deciding to buy a new item of clothing.

📱 57% say social media influences their clothing purchases.

🔎 Three quarters (78%) feel it’s becoming harder to find clothes that feel individual.

😟 Almost three in five (57%) feel pressure to update their wardrobe and keep up with changing trends.

🎒 Among 18-24 year-olds, algorithms are cited as the single biggest influence on what they wear or buy by 45% – markedly higher than the 27% seen across the population as a whole.

Just Browsing

How we all get here is unique,
Maybe you've popped in for a break?
Or a quiet stroll away from studying,
Or something specific you need to take.

For all we know, you're a stranger,
Or most likely a lovely regular,
A window shopper, bargain hunter,
Or just a curious wanderer.

When you hit the shop floor,
You're lost in thoughts:

Do I need this?
Should I buy?
Maybe later,
I’ll walk by.

No need to rush,
No need to choose.
It’s ok.
We know you're..

This young customer came in to the shop last Tuesday, and found their special pre-loved item: it was a backpack. 🎒

Imagine all the journeys, they will share together.

It's a good feeling to see a customer leave excitedly with something they will value and use. We live in a time of a lot of waste and we, at Oxfam Guildford, try to salvage what we can from our amazing donations so they can start a new life elsewhere.

Every item in the shop is at a different point of its journey. From homes that no longer need them and are still in decent shape to be used. These items could be anything. What they all share in common is they are looking (and waiting) for a new home.
