The flowers are lasting far better than I am in this heat, which i’m sure is down to the fact that they are grown hard, and don’t have too much water or nutrition. They don’t get picked and then go in and out of a cooler, it’s just me and Jo here from early, and getting them in our cool barn before it gets too hot.
If you’ve got flowers at home, change the water regularly, and keep them out of the light - and choose British, not imports to keep you smiling through the heat.

Almost the end of a lovely week. Starting off with the Chelsea flower show, and the fantastic news of a Sic code for flower farmers, so we can measure our contribution. Going through lots of brightly coloured flower orders for florists, and one white and green wedding. There have been happy faces from Pick your own customers, thank you messages before i’ve got home for flower deliveries, and an awful lot of plants in the ground including the first 100 Dahlias. Now i do need to make a list of what else needs sowing, and there’s a cake to make for tomorrow morning’s Cut and arrange workshop. But now it’s G&T time - who’s joining me?

May is always a panic…. There’s so much to plant, but you’ve got to keep an eye on the weather. There’s plenty to pick, but that means i’ve got to be selling, and phoning customers and emails, and WATERING, plus keeping sowing, including biennials for next year. Ok anyone with a garden will know the May panic.
But then yesterday afternoon I looked at the orders sitting in my barn doorway ready to be delivered, and I allowed myself an “i grew that” moment.
Flower arrangers buckets, bunches of Alliums and Iris, and subscription bouquets all waiting to go out and bring a smile to someone’s face.
Ok there are still emails to answer and 3 greenhouses full of plugs to plant, but the field is producing beautifully.

If you want a bouquet to make someone smile, don’t forget our Friday flowers deliveries are FREE in GU4 and KT24 - that includes the Horsleys the Clandons, Merrow, and the area around. - oh and your order makes me smile too, so please use this local business.

Who could you tag in GU4 or KT24 to remind them about our flower delivery?

We know not everyone can picture in their minds eye what a flower farm looks like, so we have our field tours each month.

We don’t grow everything in glasshouses, most of our flowers are out on the field in rows, organised by when they flower.

We’re not like a garden, our plants aren’t for show, so we don’t care about weeds unless they stop the flowers growing.

We grow a big mixture of varieties, so that biodiversity does a lot of the work.

Plus we actually want to be picking our flowers in bud or the day they flower, so those Iris are yelling “missed me”

If you’d like to be shown round the flower field and be inspired by our growing techniques. See the crops we are going to have available this year, and learn about our no-dig methods and how we grow with no chemical herbicides or pesticides then do book to come and join us.

What questions would you ask about Flower farming on our chalky Surrey soil?

Congratulations to Ant and Elly, married today and the rain held off!! The May hungry gap had moved to the end of April, so there were no tulips left, but instead we had the last butterfly ranunculus, lilac, hesperis, dicentra and iceland poppies. Have a lovely rest of the bank holiday weekend.

Is Flower club for you?

Each month at the farm we have a session on a Saturday morning for those that love to grow and arrange with flowers.

It’s suitable for all, from beginners, to advanced flower arrangers.

We look at how we grow our seasonal blooms, how and when we pick them, and how we arrange them in the vase.

This month is about Ranunculus and Tulips.

Come and join us on Saturday or each month until September.
