Just a quick update that Finest Fossils will be closed for annual leave from today and will reopen on the 10th.

I’m away in Tunisia for the week, but I’ll still try to reply to messages when possible. Any online orders placed during this time will be dispatched once I’m back.

Thank you as always for all the support recently — especially with some incredible pieces finding new homes over the last few weeks. Lots of exciting new stock will be arriving soon after I’m back as well.

See you all on the 10th!

One of the most striking trilobites we’ve had through the shop in a long time.

This incredible “flying” Crotalocephalus trilobite has been prepared in a dramatic elevated position, giving the illusion that it’s almost suspended in motion above the matrix. The preparation work on pieces like this can take countless hours, carefully exposing each individual spine and segment without damaging the fossil itself.

Crotalocephalus trilobites lived during the Devonian Period, around 390 million years ago, when much of the world’s oceans were filled with strange armoured marine life long before the age of the dinosaurs.

Museum-quality preparation, natural sculpture, and an amazing example of prehistoric life frozen in time.

Available now at Finest Fossils in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire.

There’s always something exciting about unwrapping a new arrival for the collection.

This latest piece has just arrived to take the place of the recently sold Mosasaur jaw — an incredible Otodus vertebra and tooth plate, combining fossilised vertebrae with one of the ocean’s most iconic prehistoric sharks.

Pieces like this are exactly why no two visits to the shop are ever quite the same. New displays are constantly arriving, evolving and finding their place within the collection.

Available to view now at Finest Fossils in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire.

Sharks are one of the oldest surviving animal lineages on Earth, with the earliest shark ancestors appearing more than 400 million years ago during the Devonian Period.

To put that into perspective, the first true trees did not appear until roughly 350 million years ago, meaning sharks had already been evolving in Earth’s oceans for tens of millions of years before forests even existed.

Over that immense span of time, sharks have survived multiple mass extinctions, dramatic climate shifts, and the rise and fall of countless prehistoric species.

Even today, modern sharks still retain many of the same highly effective evolutionary traits that made their ancient ancestors such successful predators hundreds of millions of years ago.

It’s an incredible reminder of just how ancient and resilient life on Earth truly is.

Celestite is one of those minerals that almost doesn’t look real in natural light.

The soft blue colour and glassy crystal structure are completely natural, formed over millions of years beneath the Earth’s surface.

It’s a mineral that changes depending on the light and angle you view it from, calm and subtle indoors, but glowing with colour in daylight.

Swipe through to see how dramatically natural light transforms the crystals.

Some pieces immediately capture your attention.

Others reveal more the longer you look at them.

That’s part of what makes natural history so fascinating — no two collections, textures or formations are ever truly the same.

Not every fossil tells the story of survival.

Some tell the story of a moment that never happened.

This fossilised dinosaur egg nest, preserved for more than 70 million years, is one of the most incredible reminders that fossils are more than just stone — they’re snapshots of prehistoric life itself.

Absolutely fascinating.

Frozen in time, this is not just a rock, it’s a fossilised nest of unhatched dinosaur eggs, a silent snapshot of life that never had a chance to hatch. Each egg holds a mystery, preserving a moment from more than 70 million years ago when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

Fossilised nests like this give paleontologists rare and powerful clues about dinosaur behaviour. They reveal that many species laid their eggs in carefully chosen sites, often returning to the same nesting grounds year after year. Some dinosaurs even arranged their eggs in neat circles or rows, suggesting a surprising level of care and planning.

Inside some eggs, scientists have discovered perfectly preserved embryos, complete with tiny claws, bones, and even skin impressions. These finds help researchers understand how long dinosaurs incubated their eggs, how they developed before hatching, and what their early life may have looked like.

This particular nest represents an entire generation that never saw the light of day, perhaps wiped out by a flood, a volcanic eruption, or a predator raid. Whatever the cause, the moment was sealed under layers of sediment, turning tragedy into one of the most incredible windows into the past.

Strange Fact: Some fossilised nests show evidence of parents guarding them, suggesting that certain dinosaurs were devoted caregivers, a behaviour still seen in modern birds today.
