An incredible piece of history unearthed by David Baker!
While out metal detecting, David Baker recovered what appears to be a remarkable 13th-century medieval silver seal matrix incorporating a much older Roman engraved intaglio.
The beautiful blue intaglio at its centre, depicting a seated classical figure, is believed to date to the Roman period (2nd–3rd century AD). Around a thousand years later, it was carefully mounted into a finely crafted medieval silver seal matrix, creating a unique object that bridged two very different periods of history.
This fascinating practice of reusing Roman gems in medieval seals reflects the admiration people had for ancient craftsmanship, with many believing such gems possessed symbolic or protective qualities.
Discoveries like this are exceptionally rare and offer a tangible connection to nearly 2,000 years of history, from Roman Britain through to the medieval world. It's an outstanding detector find and a reminder that every signal has the potential to uncover an extraordinary story.
Congratulations to David Baker on an absolutely stunning discovery!
