With a new month comes our new and exciting featured Books of the Month!

August has a fantastic array of fiction and non-fiction to whet your summer appetite!
From our afore mentioned Debut prize winner and now Booker longlisted ‘May We Feed the King’ by Rebecca Perry spinning fascinating historical fiction fun, to an explosive expose, sleeper trains, gatsby-esque island mysteries, animal adventures in a world devoid of humans, a vampiric split-timeline love story and of course the eagerly awaited fifth book in the Hunger games universe…there’s truly a book for everyone to enjoy!

And don’t forget that with each book of the month purchase, you are welcome to a free drink made by our lovely café team awaiting you on the first floor.

🎈 Join us in store as we celebrate Pokemon turning 30 years old! 🎈
 
From 1st - 8th August you can find colouring in sheets, activity sheets and you can even win some tasty treats if you can find all of our very special bookshop gym badges hiding in the children’s section!
 
There will also be a very special Pokemon day on Friday 7th August, with prizes, fancy dress and some Pokemon card swapping, it is the perfect chance for Pokemon fans to share their excitement with us!

The day (at the Theakston Crime Writing Festival) started off bright and early with people browsing from 8.30am and it is ending on a bang with a massive queue for David Baldacci, the winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award this year! How long do you think this queue will last tonight???

Calling all detectives! We have heard a deadly rumour that the Old Peculiar crime writing festival is back in Harrogate at the Old Swan Hotel from today 23-26 July 2026!

Meet some of the country’s finest writers as they sign their books, and discover your new favourite crime novel with us, the proud official bookselling partner!

Visit us on site at our pop up bookstore in the Old Swan Hotel, or why not visit our beautiful Harrogate branch on James Street whilst you’re in town!

It's the summer holidays which means we have a whole host of fabulous activities and events taking place in store!

Whether you are a crime fan, a Pokémon connoisseur or want to spend a little more time celebrating one of our favourite bears in fiction, we have plenty of events to keep the little ones (and some bigger ones too) entertained.

From the 21st July to 31st July we collect all the clues and solve some mysteries with our Criminally Good Fun activities. Robin Stevens will also be joining us in store on Saturday 25th July signing copies of her bestselling children's books.

1st August to the 8th August sees us celebrating 30 years of Pokémon with some brilliantly themed events and activities, including Pokémon day on Friday 7th August! We will have goodie bags, Pokémon swap shops and a Pokémon master quiz in the evening! (Note: these events and activities are not affiliated or endorsed by the official Pokémon team in any way).

A very special bear is turning 150 years old this year so we are running some beary good activities from 9th August to 22nd August. Winnie the Pooh themed activities will take place throughout the two weeks with hunts, colouring in and maybe we will be able to gather our teddies and celebrate with a tea party too!!

During the last two weeks of the summer holiday we see the release of the 3rd epic book in Katherine Rundell's Impossible Creatures series. As such we thought it would be simply fun to have some mythological beast themed activities including a beast hunt, activity sheets and a Design your own magical creature activity!
