A quick Plein Air update…

Our artists have been properly earning their stripes today out around Hebden Bridge, painting through the drizzle, the wind and whatever else the Yorkshire weather decides to throw at them. ☔️😂

will be open from 2pm for artists to start dropping off their finished work.

So if you’re taking part, once you’ve called time on the masterpiece, head over with your finished piece.

Massive respect to everyone braving the elements today. Plein air really does mean “plein air” in Calderdale. 😅🎨

We can’t wait to see what you’ve created! 🤩

Spotted in the wild… one of today’s Plein Air artists!

There’s something lovely about seeing people dotted around Hebden Bridge, setting up wherever inspiration strikes and turning familiar corners into something completely new.

This artist found a cracking spot by the bridge with her paints out, blanket down, fully committed. Even the weather seems to be behaving… for now. 😄

If you’re out and about today, keep an eye open. You might spot easels, sketchbooks and artists tucked into all sorts of corners around town.

We love seeing Hebden Bridge through other people’s eyes.

Sid, meanwhile, has decided “plein air” means sitting outside with snacks.

Technically… he’s not entirely wrong. 😜

Plein Air Competition tomorrow🎉

If you’re taking part and have just realised your paint is running low, your favourite brush has disappeared, or you’ve somehow got everything except the one thing you actually need… we’ve got you. 😂

We’ve got paints, inks, brushes, sketchbooks, palettes and plenty of other bits for a last-minute top-up before you head out around Hebden Bridge.

These acrylic art inks are especially handy if you fancy something fluid, bold and a little bit different.

Basically: come in today, panic-buy your art supplies in a calm and dignified manner, then go and make something brilliant tomorrow. 😄

Sid says he’s packed already…

New window takeover 👀

This time we’ve handed the window over to - a South Korean artist now based here in West Yorkshire.

Her work is packed with colour, characters, tiny details and the sort of things you notice more the longer you look. Old shops, everyday places, odd little moments, hidden stories, all given their own personality.

This is exactly why we love doing these window takeovers… because the shopfront turns into a little gallery space and gives people a reason to stop, look twice and discover an artist they might not have come across before.

There are prints and tea towels too, so if something catches your eye, pop in and have a closer look.

Sid has already spent far too long trying to find himself hidden in one of the pictures. He’s convinced he’s in there somewhere. 😂

🎨 27 spaces left!!

If you’ve been meaning to sign up for the Calderdale Plein Air Competition 2026, this is your nudge.

Registration closes 5th September, and there are just 27 places remaining.

The competition takes place in Hebden Bridge on Saturday 12th September, 7:30am–5pm, which means you have a FULL day to find your spot, set up your easel and paint the valley as you see it.

It’s £10 to enter, and you can register using the QR code or via the Craft & Canvas website.

No pressure… but once those 27 spaces are gone, they’re gone.

Sid says he’s already reserved one.

Greg says sheep are not eligible.

Sid is now appealing the decision. 🤣

Happy Birthday to Mark (the other half of Greg, and the calmer half of the operation… allegedly). 😂

While Greg is usually the one getting dragged into Sid’s latest nonsense, Mark tries to keep Craft & Canvas looking like an actual shop rather than a wool-based theme park. 🤣

Today we’re celebrating the man who smiles through the chaos and probably deserves far more cake than he’s going to get.
