Russell has been so busy lending us his paws to pack the incoming orders at Gobbledy Towers, that we gently reminded him recently that it has been a fair while since he recommended a new book to us. So, while we were all taking a bit of a breather before the craziness of World Book Month, we were delighted when he unexpectedly popped up from behind a bookcase one day holding a copy of Wild Child by Dara McAnulty!

This impressively chunky book might at first be mistaken for a straightforward picture storybook, but it is much more than that. It is a wonderful exploration and celebration of the natural world and all of the magnificent wildlife you can find nearby. The book takes us on a journey through a back garden and then out to the woodlands, the uplands, a riverbank and beyond. Our guide is Dara McAnulty, an award-winning young writer and naturalist, whose profound love of nature seeps into each page.

We really liked the way the book blends facts about birds, trees, plants, insects etc. with some cool poetry and practical info on nature projects. There are plenty of great illustrations on every page and even though some of the material is aimed at younger children, we think this book would suit any child up 18, that is either wildlife and nature crazy or for those who would like something to inspire them to get more engaged with it.

We think Russell picked a cracker, you can pick up this large deluxe book for a special Gobbledy Price of just £5 (rrp £12.99) while stocks last.

This charming tale, written and illustrated by Lizzy Stewart, shows us how to appreciate the sometimes frustrating and annoying differences between people…especially when that really annoying person is your own dad!

Matilda is very sensible, likes to follow instructions and does not stray too much from the path, whereas her chaotic dad is the complete opposite. So when Matilda shows him a very special treasure map at the beach one day and they decide to go off to hunt for it together, their joint adventure doesn’t go quite as planned..

This is definitely a book for anyone who knows somebody who is independently minded, impulsive and free-spirited and how people like this can be frustrating at times. But it is also about how, because they look at the world in a different way, they can show you things you don’t normally see, potentially giving you a happier and enriched life.

Now, I’m sure that many would get quite angry at the father’s somewhat random parental behaviour in this story (and be tempted to call Social Services on him!). But as their adventure progresses and the magic of the natural world opens up to them, we get to appreciate both of their diverse personalities and how Matilda and her dad have been complementing each other in their family life up to now. How two opposites can make a good whole.

It’s a brilliant thoughtful read and the colourful illustrations look amazing. Russell could relate as he is a ‘Matilda’ at heart as he’s always keeping us in check.

This is quite deep stuff and is another Gobbledybooks steal at just £2.50.

Bernard tries to inform his parents that there is a big monster in the garden that wants to eat him, but they are so engrossed in their day-to-day chores that they keep telling him the same thing.. “Not now, Bernard!”

Bernard is swiftly eaten by the monster, who enters his house but also finds it hard to get any attention from either of the parents. None the wiser, they carry on with their business while the monster eats Bernard’s dinner, watches the TV and finally sleeps in his bed! The confused monster even questions his role within the story at one point and declares aloud - ‘But I’m a monster!’ Even though the book ends on a quiet note, there is trouble brewing for the distracted parents, whom you suspect might also be eventually eaten.

There was a time when this darkly surreal tale about the perils of poor parenting skills would have been dismissed as an example of a previous bygone age. However, in these times parents may be more attuned to their offspring’s emotional needs but there are new challenges and time pressures in the age of the cost of the living crisis, where both parents often need to earn a living. All of this makes ‘Not Now Bernard’ suddenly not only quaint but also once more relevant.

You will either find this disturbing story, in which the main character is eaten within the first few pages, unsettling and distressing or you will find its chaotic narrative hilarious and engrossing.

As die-hard David McKee fans here at Gobbledy Books we absolutely loved it and it is our strongly recommended Book of the Month for August!

Russell’s Book of the Month for June
Peril at the Bake Off by Ruth Quayle & Marta Kissi

Russell, our resident Pandasaur, is always the first to help out when urgent orders need packing at Gobbledy HQ.

So imagine our surprise when one busy morning (when we could really use a helpful extra paw or two), he was nowhere to be found!!

Now Russell can be shy and retiring, especially when engrossed in a good book and a quick search of his usual hidey holes and book nooks still produced no results. We were starting to get quite concerned, when he was finally discovered curled up in a large box in the corner of the warehouse…totally engrossed in June’s Book of the Month!!

Which was appropriate, really..as Peril at the Bake Off is a rather good mystery story.

It is the summer holiday and Joe Robinson and his cousins are staying with their granny in Muddlemoor village. The problem is that Muddlemoor is a hotspot for crime. When Granny’s precious cake recipe goes missing days before the Great Village Bake Off, Joe, Tom and Pip are FLABBERGASTED..

Russell says that Peril at the Bake Off is a real page-turner. There are lots of hidden clues to spot and the young team of amateur sleuths get themselves some really hilarious situations. Also watch out for the strange robot cat, the cool illustrations and a totally unexpected twist at the end! He really enjoyed reading it and cannot wait to try the other books in the series.

It is our well-deserved Book of the Month for June, available now at the Gobbledy Special price of just £3.50, while stocks last.

Russell’s Book of the Month for May
To Catch a Cloud by Elena de Roo & Hannah Peck

We’ve said it before, but many of the very best children’s books can often be miniature works of art. To Catch a Cloud is an example of how a picture book can fuse poetry, storytelling and astounding artwork to create a captivating and exhilarating whole.

A boy and his dog challenge the wind, the waves and the clouds to a race. As he whizzes across the land, sea and water the leader of the chase ebbs and flows between the boy and the elements to dramatic effect.

To Catch a Cloud is a fierce, constantly shifting moveable feast, underpinned by Elena de Roo’s poetry, which blends perfectly with Hannah Peck’s stunning images. A perfect book to absorb alone or to read aloud. We hopefully look forward to more picture books by this dream team in the future.

Gobbledy Special Price £3.50.

While most of our books are only £2.50, we sometimes find something nice, that falls outside of our normal price point. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on these extra special titles, they might cost a bit more, but they still offer great value for money!

Footnote: Hannah Peck is an illustrator to watch. Her incredible drawings and two-page spreads for this book were inspired by the colours of the French Impressionists and classic painters of storms such J.M.Turner.

Yes/No is NOT a book from a famous illustrator about opposites and so we have decided to not review a book this month.

OUR NON REVIEW - The Opposite of what we really think..

We hated this book.

Jan Pieńkowski is a BAD illustrator and it is easy to see why so many people dislike him. He didn’t do any of the drawings for the Meg and Mog series (we REALLY disliked Meg and Mog, by the way) and his black and white illustrations for this book are just as ugly, uninteresting and boring as the ones he didn’t do for that. This book went on FAR too long and what is the point of a book like this anyway, when it is aimed at really old people?

We would NEVER say that this book and the other titles in the series (which are NOT available at Gobbledybooks) are miniature masterpieces of design and perfect for introducing early concepts to very young children. We would never say that.

So whatever you do, don’t buy a copy of this book, because at £2.50 it is so expensive that you won’t have any money to spend on anything else, ever again.

Books by the same author that aren’t in the same series are - Weather/Shapes/Colours/Numbers/Faces/Homes/Food/Time and Wheels. And they are all equally as bad, so really don’t bother.

The Bedtime Bear Sticker Activity Book by Ian Whybrow & Axel Scheffler

It has been a while since we had a sticker/activity book for our Book of the Month, so what better choice than this excellent bumper edition, based on a story from one of our best-loved authors Ian Whybrow and illustrator Axel Scheffler.

This large format book features tons of cool activities, including games, puzzles and jigsaws plus plenty of stickers to keep those little hands busy.

Axel Scheffler’s illustrations, particularly his ones for Julia Donaldson, have become classics in their own right. Here you get over 400 of them in sticker form and all for our regular Gobbledy Book price of just £2.50!
