Made by J. M. Blashfield, this interesting bust depicts 17th century MP, solider and Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658). Cromwell is an important figure of British history having lead Parliamentary forces to victory during the English Civil War, subsequently overthrowing the Stuart monarchy.
Beautifully sculpted in buff terracotta, this bust depicts Cromwell as he is often seen in paintings and statuary, dressed in high-collared military uniform with a prominent brow and locks of curled hair. The sculpture captures Cromwell's authoritarian persona, reflecting his commanding presence as a successful 17th century military leader.
The bust is stamped 'J. M. Blashfield' to the base and etched with 'Published by J. M. Blashfield April 1861' along the back shoulder, certifying it as a genuine Blashfield work.
