A month later and Kat has sent us an update from The Wild Florist.

This is the useful bit, because composting isn’t really about setting something up and hoping for the best. You need to have a little rummage and see what’s actually happening.

With the worms, we’re looking for signs that they have spread into the heap and started working through the material.

Ideally, the compost should feel moist rather than dry, the original garden waste should be becoming less recognisable, and you should start seeing darker, finer, more crumbly material where the worms and microbes have been at work.

And, of course, we want to see worms.

If it’s too dry, add some moisture. If it’s getting too hot, make sure the worms have cooler material to retreat into. If they’re happy and active, one of the best things you can do is stop fiddling and let them get on with it.

Kat also now has her first bucket of fermented Bokashi ready to add to the heap, bringing kitchen scraps into the cycle too.

And this is why we get so excited about soil.

There can be more living organisms in a teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on the entire planet.

That extraordinary underground community is doing the real work — breaking things down, cycling nutrients and helping plants grow.

So this isn’t really about adding a few worms or buying a Bokashi bucket.

It’s about creating the conditions for life.

Garden waste + kitchen waste + Bokashi + worms + time = beautiful compost.

And the compost goes straight back into Kat’s walled garden to grow another crop of flowers.

Waste becomes compost. Compost becomes soil. Soil grows flowers. And round we go again. 🌱🪱🌸 To find out more about Kat and her amazing walled garden - just search on The Wild Florist on Facebook or Instagram

Part Three of our visit to Kat at The Wild Florist — and this time we were setting her up with a Bokashi kit.

There is not actually much to it.

A bucket with a tight-fitting lid, a strainer, a tap and some Bokashi bran.

But what it allows you to do is pretty clever.

Bokashi is not conventional composting. It is fermentation.

Food waste is added to the bucket with Bokashi bran, which carries the microbes that get the fermentation process going. The bucket stays sealed so the whole thing happens with very little oxygen.

And because you are fermenting rather than simply leaving food to rot, you can include things that are often awkward in a normal compost system — cooked leftovers, bread, rice, pasta, dairy and even meat and fish scraps.

Once the bucket is full, you leave it to ferment and then add the contents to your compost heap.

That fermented material still needs to finish breaking down, but by putting it into the heap you are keeping all those nutrients and all that organic matter in the system.

Which is exactly what we want here.

Kat grows the flowers.

The garden creates waste.

The kitchen creates waste.

The Bokashi helps capture it.

The compost heap processes it.

The worms get involved.

And eventually it all goes back into the soil.

That is the bit I find exciting.

Not another product for the sake of it.

Just a simple way of closing the loop a little bit more.

Food waste in. Compost out. Better soil. More flowers.

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 5 star review from Maria Galyer: Great products

Great products. The birds love both the seeds and the suet balls. I really can't keep up with feeding them. The bird food is bringing into my garden a large number of different birds, which is lovely.
Prompt delivery. Easy to order on line. Great value for money. Highly recommend.

Part Two of our visit to Kat Bevis at The Wild Florist — and this time we got properly Wiggly. 🪱🌱

Kat is already making her own compost from the garden, so we decided to add composting worms and see how they could help the heap along.

First, we checked the temperature. Composting worms are brilliant workers, but they are not hot-composting worms — if a heap is really cooking, it is too hot for them.

The heap was fine temperature-wise, but it was a little dry, so we soaked some coir bedding first. That gave the worms a moist, neutral little patch to settle into before they started exploring the compost around them.

Then we tucked them in and covered the heap back up.

What will they do?

They’ll work their way through the decomposing material, feeding on microbes and organic matter, helping to break it down further and producing wonderfully rich worm casts as they go.

They also help mix the heap, improve its structure and create the sort of living compost that feeds the soil rather than simply adding bulk to it.

And that, really, is the whole point.

Kat is growing flowers above ground.

We’re trying to help her grow life below it too. To find out more about Kat and her amazing walled garden - just search on The Wild Florist on Facebook or Instagram The Wild Florist Garden
