CUP Ceramics Community

CUP Ceramics Community CUP Ceramics Community is an open-access ceramics studio situated Hereford. We provide a unique and creative community for potters and ceramicists.

CUP is Herefordshire’s first open access ceramics studio. This means that it is open to all, no matter your level of experience, 6 days a week, day times and evenings. We provide a calm and creative environment where you can share the satisfying and therapeutic experience of making in clay. We offer access to excellent, large capacity kiln space, multiple wheels, plenty of work bench space, slab r

oller and your own storage space at the studio. Mentoring and advice will always be available from an experienced ceramicist who will be on site at all times. We aim to create an artistic community for beginners, intermediate and advanced ceramicists that share ideas, skills and friendships in an inclusive, relaxed and ambient environment. Allowing time for experimentation, extensive development of skills and of course mistakes! Courses catering for various levels of expertise and specific skill development also run regularly. We’re a social enterprise so the profits that we make will be put back into benefitting the local community and to making sure that the arts flourish in our county. If you like what you've heard and would like to track our progress or become a member please like our page or alternatively sign up to our mailing list via our website.

It's time to get your texture on! Whether you use thick slips or tools to impress (rolled up tinfoil, fancy texture tools, a simple knife or pin, car mats, baking rolling pins, we've seen it all!) you can create textured surfaces for many reasons. Are you creating a sculpture that needs a bit of gnarl? A mug that needs that final touch? A plaque that needs personality? Texture might be just what you're missing!

Throw something that needs two parts! Less along the lines of a double walled vessel, think more jars, teapots, strange sculptures, just make it small. As small as you can!

Handbuilders, it's time to switch it up! Do you avoid sculpting because you can't get behind abstraction, or struggle with form? If you can 't be bothered with mugs, have too many bowls, and are bored of vases, now is the time to push yourself to try something new!
Do you have too many lad or ladies littering your house? Strange critters or creations piling up in the garden? Objects calling for silent consideration on all you credenzas? It's time to make a mug! Give that perfect breakfast bowl you've been dreaming of a breath of life! Make a weird critter that can contain flowers!

We figured it was time to reintroduce our team of teachers!
Lucy Blackley is one half of our Bax & Blacks dynamic duo that you'll catch on a Saturday. Blackley is a handbuilder, you'll find her characterful sheep in galleries up and down the country, tucked away in the studio, or unceremoniously plonked in her rucksack! (50/50 chance that they'll be greenware too!). You'll find her and the flock at .co.uk in the pens next weekend, where she has been known to nag an award!

Lucy assists with handbuilding teaching during our tasters, one day intensives, ten week course cover, 4 week handbuilding courses, raku experience, and she even makes lunches!

There's not much in the handbuilding world that she can't wrangle, and she's been known to sneak onto a wheel late at night too...

I could never do that
A phrase we hear weekly at the studio!

We’re here to make pottery accessible for all, whether you just want to get lost in the process for a day, or learn skills over a few weeks

I could never learn that
We get so many students through full of self doubt, but with a little encouragement we can all come a long way!

It’s so easy to forget as adults, how scary learning something new is, alongside a room full of strangers.

However that’s exactly what we specialise in! We pride ourselves on being an encouraging environment to learn communally in.

Learn to throw on the wheel, if you take a long course we expect to see centring and confident turning by day 4. If you take a shorter course we’ll help with the tricky bits and let you enjoy the process!

The basics of handbuilding come quicker than the wheel, however it’s so important to take your time and slow the roll. A nice finish comes with patience, and a slow process.

Patience is key across both processes, with the wheel it’s over days and handbuilding draws that out over hours. Both meditative, but in their own ways.

If you’d like to try your hand, we have a mix of tasters, one week courses, and ten week courses starting from June - September 😎
