CUP Ceramics Community

CUP Ceramics Community CUP Ceramics Community is an open-access ceramics studio situated Hereford. We provide a unique and creative community for potters and ceramicists.

CUP is Herefordshire’s first open access ceramics studio. This means that it is open to all, no matter your level of experience, 6 days a week, day times and evenings. We provide a calm and creative environment where you can share the satisfying and therapeutic experience of making in clay. We offer access to excellent, large capacity kiln space, multiple wheels, plenty of work bench space, slab r

oller and your own storage space at the studio. Mentoring and advice will always be available from an experienced ceramicist who will be on site at all times. We aim to create an artistic community for beginners, intermediate and advanced ceramicists that share ideas, skills and friendships in an inclusive, relaxed and ambient environment. Allowing time for experimentation, extensive development of skills and of course mistakes! Courses catering for various levels of expertise and specific skill development also run regularly. We’re a social enterprise so the profits that we make will be put back into benefitting the local community and to making sure that the arts flourish in our county. Meet our teachers!
Amy leads our ten week Monday night courses from the wheel, and shares responsibility for our four week throwers with Bex.

Having joined the team while studying at HCA, went from mopping floors to managing the studio, amongst 'any other business' jobs that need doing too.

She prides herself in driving .b_ceramics mad by turning her hand to any technique (gauntlet) thrown down by students, studio members or staff that they want to learn more about too.

You can find her work in shops around Hereford, and of course in too

Georgie is our handbuilding teacher for our ten week Monday nights, and many of our four week courses too!

Having trained in Cardiff she joined the team after graduating, and hasn't left. She remains a diehard hand builder despite many attempts to lure her to the dark side, and it remains an ongoing challenge between herself and Amy to see how many of their shared students they can convince to join their team over the span of the ten week courses. The jury is still out, with no clear winner. Yet...

Georgie is an ideas girlie, always coming up with new and exciting ideas for everything from course content to how we can design the studio space to work best. She'll also guide students on how to best make every and any pot ideas they come to her with!

The August challenge is in!
Surface design:
Sgraffito. A simple but highly effective technique we teach all of our students on the ten week course; coming from the Italian sgraffiare "to scratch" it couldn't be easier! On greenware, paint down a layer of coloured slip or underglaze, and scratch through designs or patterns.

Throwing:
Throw a pot in two parts and stick them together, how hard could it be? The is a great challenge for practising your accuracy when throwing forms, and improving your material knowledge by getting your timing just right. Too wet and the pot will collapse, too dry and they will struggle to bond and may pop apart!

Handbuilding:
Use and opposite clay. Whether it's a different colour - terracotta or black to your white, buff, or porcelain -
or different texture - smooth groggless or super grogged -
or different body - paperclay or un-papered -
it can be great to get our of your comfort zone, have a play! You may find out exactly why you love your everyday clay, or you may just find a new summer fling!
You don't have to commit to an entire bag of clay. Find a pottery buddy that you can swap a kilo (2 pounds for old money) of clay with and see what you both create!
