🌱 It’s the little things…

We talk a lot about reuse and sustainability at the Wigan Cycle Project and at Rebuild With Hope Wigan. Sometimes that means keeping hundreds of bikes and thousands of components in use rather than sending them to waste.

But sometimes, sustainability is much simpler.
Just over a year ago, Tom - our youngest member of staff - qualified as a Level 2 Bike Mechanic. Since then, he’s become really good at spotting the little things we could do differently.

Recently, he noticed just how many cable ties we were getting through.

We use them to securely attach our bike safety certificates and job sheets to handlebars. It means we can properly identify customers' bikes, keep our workshop organised and, importantly, show customers on the shop floor that their bike comes with a certificate confirming it has been safety checked at the point of sale.

The problem? We were getting through 300-500 single-use cable ties every month!

That's potentially 3,600-6,000 cable ties a year!

Embarrassing.

So Tom asked the simple question:
"Can we reuse something we've already got?"

And this month, we introduced our own reusable cable ties made from used brake or gear cable and a used brake lever adjuster. πŸ”§β™»οΈ

Something that would previously have been considered waste is now doing another job - and can keep doing it again and again.
It's a tiny change.

But that's exactly the point.

Sustainability isn't just about the big projects. It's about being consistent. Looking at what we do, challenging ourselves to improve it and finding ways to keep materials in use for longer.

At The Cycle Project, we're trying to build that thinking into everything we do - repair, reuse, repurpose, repeat.

And Tom deserves a massive shout-out for spotting this one. πŸ‘

Just over a year into his career as a bike mechanic and already finding ways to make the whole operation more sustainable.
Small change. Big principle.

πŸ‘€ LOOKING FOR HELP βœ‹

Do any of our followers have some heavy duty bolt cutters and a little bit of spare time to come and help cut a bike lock off of a frame?

We have had this lovely Barracuda MTB donated which we would love to refurbish and put out for sale but the lock is wrapped around the frame and there's no key πŸ˜…

πŸ™ Thanks in advance!
