Minibeast

Minibeast Minibeast the global name in entomology, we specialise in other natural history items including giclé

All of the specimens we work with are raised on butterfly farms which help to preserve the valuable rainforest habitat by providing villagers an ethical income other than clearing virgin tropical rainforest. Raising insects to sell is sometimes the only incentive some indigenous people have to save the environment they live in. The specimens are from butterfly and insect farms in Australia, Asia,

North, Central and Southern America rainforest areas which breed for insect collectors around the world. Butterflies live their entire life span on these rainforest farms, and produce eggs for the next generation. In the wild, less than 7% of butterfly eggs will survive to adulthood. In contrast, captive breeding programs on butterfly farms achieve 70%-90% survival rates. The farms also release up to 20% of all the generation back into the wild helping to preserve the insects in their natural habitat. Hopefully our work will introduce some wonderful species to brighten peoples homes who otherwise would have never experienced one in the wild. These real butterfly displays are great for environmentally friendly gifts, artistic displays, teachers, scientists and private collectors.

It's not an exaggeration, this magnificent creature is among the largest and heaviest beetles on Earth. Just imagine this gentle giant flying! 🪲
Fun fact: They can weigh as much as a small apple when in their larval stage! 🐛

This is the sound of an insect that has been waiting underground for 17 years! Once they emerge, they only have a few weeks to mate, and their mating call can hit over 100 decibels!

From a tiny twig to a full, walking leaf! 🌿
The transformation of the Leaf Bug is one of nature's most perfect magic tricks ✨
With each molt, they unlock the next level of camouflage, developing the iconic leaf-like lobes on their bodies and legs.

Brahmaea wallichii, The Japanese Owl Moth. The wingspan can reach 100 mm (3.9 in) to 120 mm (4.7 in). Brahmaea wallichii has striking, owl-like eye patterns on its wings, which help scare off predators by mimicking the eyes of a much larger animal. When threatened, it flashes these eye spots by spreading its wings suddenly — a classic example of deimatic behavior (startle display)!

Displaying the fantastic and iridescent purple colouring on the ventral side of this White Witch Moth (Thysania agrippina). We are planning to do a framed display of both sides of this stunning moth; which happens to also be the largest wingspan of any moth, even beating the well known Atlas Moth.

A little surprise coming out the workshop today, not a specimen we stock, but mixed in from one of our butterfly projects. From what I can tell it’s a Papilio peranthus adamantius! Should this one make an appearance onto the Minibeast website?

Mounting one of our latest male and female beetle pairs, the enormous Elephant beetle, aptly named.

The Elephant beetle (Megasoma elephas) is a member of the family Scarabaeidae and the subfamily Dynastinae. They are covered with a coat of fine hairs. These grow particularly thick on the beetle’s elytra. The hairs give the beetle’s body a yellowish colour - one of the world’s largest beetles.
