In the Summer 2026 edition of Vanity Fair on Jewellery, Joanna Hardy shares insights into an exciting project at St Paul's Cathedral, London, which is reviving the time-honoured skill of gold gilding with the support of SMO Gold 🪙

Did you know? One gram of gold can be hammered to cover an area of one square metre. It can be beaten into incredibly thin sheets, 0.1 microns (0.0001 mm) thick, while maintaining its structure. This feathery, delicate gold is known as gold leaf, and it's at the heart of the gilding process.

St Paul's is now undertaking a massive conservation project to restore the cupola, ball and cross that sit above its 111m-high dome. The Goldsmiths'​ Company will advise and support the regilding of the dome’s ball and cross, last gilded in the 1960s, as well as the Golden Gallery just below, which was last gilded in 1863.

The artisans in charge of this skilled work will use SMO Gold to achieve their aims thanks to its unparalleled traceability, transparency and provenance.

Goldsmiths' Fair EBB Recipient Spotlight - Jessica Awari-Tefé 💫

Week Two of Goldsmiths' Fair will commence on September 29, featuring a further five recipients of the Emerging Business Bursary. As part of this support package, each designer receives 400g of AgAIN Silver – guaranteed to be recycled from medical X-ray waste – to elevate their creativity and nurture a passion for fully traceable precious metals.

Among the Week Two designers is Jessica Awari-Tefé – a British-Nigerian silversmith based in the Scottish Borders whose practice is shaped by a background in materials engineering and metallurgy.

Recently appointed a fellow of Bishopsland Educational Trust, her work draws on seasonal rhythms and the poetry of the natural world, translating these influences into sculptural objects and jewellery in precious metal.

Jessica specialises in chasing and repoussé alongside traditional Japanese metalworking and decorative techniques, informed by the historic influence of japonisme.

Here are some of our team's biggest takeaways from the event:

📍 It's no longer enough to have a great product; there must be a point of difference, a unique angle or a fresh way to engage with customers.

📍 Independent retailers are just as vital as large-scale manufacturers in nurturing the next generation of jewellery-making talent with their sophisticated in-house workshops.

📍 Consumers are demanding to know where their precious metals come from, with many now expressing welcome scepticism about 'recycled' claims without context.

📍 Diamond and precious metal testers are no longer just a 'nice to have'. Instead, they save business owners thousands by minimising costly mistakes when buying, sourcing, and managing repair processes.

📍 Rather than underestimating the second-hand and pre-owned market, businesses are nurturing this stream as a major source of income, supported by stone-set recovery refining.

An exciting moment for AgAIN Silver on the Alexander McQueen SS27 runway 💥

Supermodel Karen Elson was seen wearing a significant sterling silver harness, created by Shaun Leane for his commission-only atelier, 12, crafted entirely in precious metal recycled from medical X-ray waste by The Betts Group.

This is the seventh work from 12 unveiled since the atelier launched earlier this month. It marks an important milestone for both Shaun Leane, who first collaborated with Lee Alexander McQueen in 1995, and the House of Alexander McQueen, which returned to London Fashion Week for the new season.

Leane explains: "This piece has been made the way we always made things, by hand, with the time it deserves. It is a continuation of what we started, and my way of honouring a legacy I carry into everything I create."

Every element of the piece was raised, forged, engraved and polished by hand. What reads as leather is revealed as metal. The collar, belt and hip belt are articulated on concealed hinges and fastened with studs and buckles, completed with engraved stitching. The buckles are sandblasted against a mirror polish, offering two distinct finishes.

The harness weighs 2.7 kg and is hallmarked under 12 and engraved with the McQueen logo.

Leane continues: "Every material has a past and a consequence. I choose partners who share my values, from fellow artisans to my entire supply chain. The Betts Group supplies AgAIN Silver, recovered from medical X-ray film: a material for contemporary creative industries choosing to be part of the solution. It transforms waste into something beautiful while returning vital funds to NHS Trusts. That is responsible creativity.

Goldsmiths' Fair EBB Recipient Spotlight - Makila Nsika 💫

Our commitment to Goldsmiths' Fair's Emerging Business Bursary initiative includes a gift of 4kg of AgAIN Silver, split evenly among the 10 recipients, so they can create new works with responsibly sourced, fully traceable precious metals.

The final EBB recipient participating in Week One of the Fair is Makila Nsika, the award-winning designer and maker behind M.kala.

Makila creates contemporary jewellery that bridges cultural memory, material innovation, and contemporary design. Her work balances the precision of emerging technologies with the organic fluidity of nature, resulting in sculptural pieces that feel both refined and elemental.

Collaborating with artisans in Congo, she works to revive endangered making traditions while exploring unconventional organic materials, including palm nut kernel as a sustainable alternative to endangered precious wood. Through an experimental, research-led approach, her work reimagines traditional techniques in a contemporary jewellery context, reflecting themes of transformation, identity, and sustainability.

Goldsmiths' Fair EBB Recipient Spotlight – Lois Lo 💫

The Betts Group is proud to support the recipients of the Goldsmiths' Fair's Emerging Business Bursary with a gift of AgAIN Silver.

Our multi-year commitment to the Fair supports the next generation of jewellery-making talent and highlights responsibly sourced precious metals with full provenance, transparency, and traceable supply chains.

Among the chosen designers in 2026 is Lois Lo, a Hong Kong-born jeweller whose work explores line, structure and perception. After discovering an affinity for metal, she completed a BA in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins and an MA at the Royal College of Art in 2023.

Her practice challenges traditional jewellery hierarchies through inventive stone-setting techniques and advanced laser welding. Drawing from construction methods and product design, she carves and stacks gemstones as architectural forms to create refined contemporary pieces.

In 2026, she was awarded Preziosa Young, following Gold in Laser Technology and Silver in Creative Setting at the GC&DC Awards in 2025.

Goldsmiths' Fair EBB Recipient Spotlight – Iona Hall 💫

For the second consecutive year, we are supporting the recipients of Goldsmiths' Fair's Emerging Business Bursary initiative with a gift of AgAIN Silver to further their work and highlight the importance of using responsibly sourced precious metals.

Among the chosen designers in 2026 is Iona Hall, a graduate of the Silversmithing and Jewellery programme at The Glasgow School of Art. Iona's work draws on her upbringing on the Scottish coast, where creativity was nurtured in a household filled with art materials and a working studio.

Iona expresses her ideas through drawing and illustration, developing themes that feed into a visual language attuned to tactile qualities. She responds intuitively to metal as a drawing surface, using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques to sculpt, texture and form an illustrative narrative.

In addition to receiving three awards from The Goldsmiths' Craft and Design Council, Iona has secured a Heritage Crafts Precious Metals Bursary (funded by The Royal Mint), a Contemporary British Silversmiths Industry Award, and the Visual Arts and Crafts Award.
