Norman Records

Norman Records UK record store selling records, CDs and tapes. First record sold? No idea. "Probably something by Cows," according to Phil. This is where the story really begins.

In the beginning (1995-1999)

Norman Records was born in 1995 when Phil set up the business in the attic of his terraced house in the Hyde Park area of Leeds. Initially selling via ads in Record Collector magazine, by 1997 Phil was employing extra members of staff to deal with the volume of parcels that were being carted off to the local post office. The early years (1999-2003)

In 1999, with a bedroom ceiling beginning to sag due to the sheer weight of vinyl upon it, office premises were found in an old Victorian school in Armley, Leeds. Using an ancient, wheezing, dial-up internet connection a basic website was built (still available!) offering the latest releases at low prices with super-fast shipping. The 'famous' Norman Records reviews started around this time, mainly written by Phil as other members of staff shouted their opinions from across the room. Eventually staff were writing their own reviews providing passionate, knowledgeable and idiosyncratic opinions. As night follows day, the extra space available led to a huge increase in the amount of stock we started to hold. To cope with the sheer number of records needing packing and reviewing, more staff were gradually employed. The difficult teenage period (2003-2010)

The decline of physical sales that began in the early 2000s presented challenges. We kept on finding the best new music out there. We kept plugging away at the reviews. And whilst we kept refining the site (making it as simple and fast as we could) we resisted the siren calls of the download markets, stuck to our guns, and continued to support the physical formats. Traffic rose, we were able to ride out the slump, and found ourselves at the forefront of a vinyl revival...

Leaving school (2010-now)

In 2010 we outgrew the antiquated Armley school and moved to larger premises in a brutalist 60s council building in Holbeck, 15 minutes from the centre of Leeds. Fun times. As well offering a much bigger space for the ever-growing stockroom, the move allowed us to officially open to the public. Although not a store in the conventional sense (far from it) customers can not only walk in and buy but ’click and collect’ ofter ordering online. A bit like an Argos for vinyl lovers. Having a physical presence also allows us to take part in Record Store Day, the first of which was a cold, frantic morning in April 2013 when crowds snaked down the stairs and out the doors of the building. Future
Who knows? We are proud to have been trading for 22 years and proud that the same ideals we started out with are still in place today. And as long as you lovely folk keep buying records, we'll keep selling and reviewing them.

DINKED ARCHIVE 37: 'Pet Grief (20th Anniversary Edition)' by The Radio Dept.

The Swedish indie group’s second LP of dream pop with synth-pop electronics and shoegaze textures returns through Dinked’s reissue department as an exclusive vinyl variant with bumper sticker and fold-out poster.

The trio partly abandoned the fuzz-laden rock-leaning sound of their acclaimed 2003 debut ‘Lesser Matters’ in favour of warm synthesiser tones, ambient pop production, new wave and C86 influences, and wistful, evocative, and nostalgic moods.

Limited to 500 copies reissue on Just So! records.

DINKED EDITION 445: 'Fudge' by Michael Kiwanuka

The soul musician returns with album five, its Dinked set featuring an alternate sleeve, photo, numbered obi-strip, and an exclusive 2LP vinyl variant.

Michael follows his 2024 release ‘Small Changes’ and its Mercury-winning predecessor ‘Kiwanuka’ with a collection built around instinct-led jams and spontaneous composition.

‘Fudge’s freewheeling approach was forged through the notion of the sheer joy of making and playing music, with Kiwanuka touching on a variety of influences across the R&B spectrum as wide-ranging as Motown, psychedelic, Southern, and deep soul to funk, jazz-fusion, and neo-soul, alongside classic psych-rock, 70s songwriters, and folk troubadours.

Limited to 1000 copies edition.

DINKED EDITION 444: ‘Ghost Coat’ by This Is The Kit

An alternate record sleeve, signed print, and exclusive vinyl variant feature in the Dinked Edition set of the latest record from the folk outfit.

Now onto their seventh LP, the Kate Stables-led have been lauded for their blend of indie and folk with influences from prog-folk, Americana, psychedelia, and freewheeling late 60s and early 70s folk rock, complete with subtle touches of brass, banjo, percussion, electric guitar and bass instrumentation.

Loosely framed around the notion of ‘home’, Stables recruits guests including Ben Howard, Richard Dawson, Rozi Plain, and Blumi for her first self-produced release. One of her moodiest and atmospheric works to date, there’s a dreamlike and distant quality running through the record’s abstract lyricism, textured playing, and ethereal production.

JUST IN! 'Hotel Usona' by Protomartyr

Always on-point post-punks Protomartyr subtly expand on their sound and lyrical themes on a Dave Fridmann-produced work.

Without sacrificing their core musical characteristics, the Detroit group expand further into art rock, industrial, noise rock and goth. Greg Ahee is particularly on form here, his decorative, textured, and mood-sculpting guitarwork pulling from everything from psychedelia, classic and cult film scores, country, Americana, and Exotica, and Middle Eastern music.

Features the already-released singles ‘Sounds We Cannot Hear’, ‘Feed the Sewer’, and ‘Exalted Eagles’ for a preview of what’s to come.

‘Hotel Usona’ is released this Friday on Domino Records on LP, coloured vinyl, and CD. Both vinyl variants include a 24-page zine and 24"x24" poster

PREORDER: 'Industrial Growth' by Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan (Norman Records Exclusive)

Gordon Chapman-Fox’s concept-focused ambient-electronic guise returns for LP seven.

The acclaimed producer and synthesist has quickly risen from an underground musician to a cult UK figure, now with high-profile festival appearances, charting albums, shop bestsellers, and sold-out tours under his belt.

Initially commissioned for a live performance at Dutch festival Roadburn, Chapman-Fox expands on this material to craft ‘Industrial Growth’, his most eclectic work to date.

We hear industrial textures and sparse yet pounding drum machines in the first track move into pieces of Steve Roach-like space ambient, playful space age pop, cinematic and moody drone tracks, unique spins on ambient techno, and menacing mechanical rhythms meeting drone-doom metal guitars in the outro tune.

Limited to 250 copies exclusive variant. Don’t sleep on these, WRNTDP is certainly popular around these parts so we don’t think they’ll be hanging around for too long…

DINKED EDITION 443: 'One Day This Will All Be Lore' by Blue Bendy

The second LP from the London group arrives with an exclusive vinyl variant and a hand-scribbled A4 acetate lyric sheet.

Following 2024 debut ‘So Medieval’, the sextet up the anti on a record mixing up art rock and indie rock/pop with glam drama and theatrical vocals, prog-pop ingenuity, post-rock textures, math rock chops, and post-punk and new wave influences ranging from post-‘Pink Flag’ Wire and XTC to contemporary Windmill Scene groups.

Lyrically, the record moves from the cryptic, surreal, and impressionistic, to the vivid, personal, and self-deprecating, documenting the band's turbulent early years alongside obscure discussions of pop culture debris.

RIYL: Squid, Mary in the Junkyard, English Teacher, Ugly, Honeyglaze, The Orchestra (For Now).
