I love an upcycle project!
Cheryl has been working on her dress (Casmerette Upton)on the Wednesday Improvers classes, made from a pair of curtains she bought for £5, just the hem to do, it’s so lovely & I’m sure there will be more now we’ve worked on the fit 😍
Claire has just joined our Thursday improvers class & I showed her how to upcycle a shirt & change the collar to a ruffle last week & then made the one she’s wearing at home.
This week we worked on taking in the waist of a pair of shorts.
Jennie is cloning her beach cover up, I’ve been showing her how to do it, so she can make a replica .
If you fancy joining us, you can work on any project you fancy, you don’t have to bring a pattern to class, we can figure it out together & I’ll show you the best approach, it’s a great way to carve out some sewing time & we have some laughs along the way too.
Improvers classes are Tuesday & Thursday mornings & Wednesday evenings.

Do you love a free pattern? There literally thousands of them available online 👍
I’m co-hosting a challenge over on YouTube & Instagram which encourages people to make a garment, using fabric from their stash, using a free pattern during the month of May. If you fancy joining in & be in with a chance of winning a prize, you will need to post your make on instagram on May 31st.
If you’re not sure where to find free patterns, I have a video showcasing some of my favourite resources & there’s a whole playlist of other YouTubers sharing their plans & ideas too.
Here’s a link to my video, I hope that you’ll join in the fun!

Have you ever wondered how to measure a zip for a project, what the numbers mean & when to use the different types of zips?
📍The length of a zip is measured from the bottom stopper to where the pull stops at the top, not the entire length of the tape (the green zip pictured is 9” long)
📍If measuring a separating zip, measure from the bottom retainer box to the top stop.
📍If a pattern specifies for a #3, #5 or #10 zip, this refers to the gauge of the zip which is the width of the zip teeth in millimetres when zipped shut.
#3 zips are often used on lightweight projects such as dresses & skirts
#5 zips are commonly used in bag making & jackets
#10 zips are ideal for heavy duty usage
📍If you can’t find the correct length zip for your project, always opt for a longer size, as that can be cut down for plastic coiled zips (but ensure you get the correct length for open ended zips)
📍Zips with metal teeth are commonly used for jeans- these are trickier to shorten & requires pliers
📍Separating zips (pictured far left) are commonly used for jackets
📍Invisible zips have the teeth on the underside of the tape. The teeth, slider & tape are the same colour making the zip less prominent & are often used in dressmaking
📍So why do we often see YKK on our zips? YKK stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikkaisha - it translates as nothing more exciting than Yoshida Company Ltd & is the largest producer of zips (around 10 billion per year)

Sharing some of my customers lovely makes from this week. Debbie has made a gorgeous fully lined pinafore & a reversible bag from fat quarters for her daughter. Christine has made a vintage inspired dress for an event that she attended & Anne has been making an outfit for her granddaughter’s prom, complete with eyelets.
What I love about the improvers classes is to see how people’s confidence grows, as they gain new skills & the community that’s formed. Fabrics & skills are shared & ideas bounced from one another make it such a joy to go to work.
If you fancy joining us on Tuesday or Thursday mornings or Wednesday evenings to work on whatever project you feel like and meet some lovely people too with me on hand to help with any trick bits, such as invisible zips, buttonholes, fitting etc, more info & booking is here: https://www.stitchmakecreate.com/classes-QxVsA/intermediate-sewing/beginners
