As a safety professional, and one who takes deep pride and passion in the profession. I feel compelled to share my thoughts on the tragic Road Traffic Accident (RTA) that sadly claimed the lives of two promising and prominent individuals, Latif and Sina. Both whom were close associates of the former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, popularly known as AJ.
First and foremost, the critical question must be asked: could this accident have been prevented?
From a safety perspective, the answer is yes.
Based on the limited information currently available, there are key areas that deserve careful consideration:
1. Driver competency:
Was the driver properly qualified, and what level of experience did they possess?
2. Fatigue management:
Which company supplied the driver, and was adequate rest ensured prior to the journey?
3. Vehicle condition:
Was the vehicle used subjected to a proper pre-use inspection by a qualified professional?
4. Speed compliance:
What is the legally permitted speed limit on Nigerian highways, and was the vehicle operating within those limits?
5. Roadside hazards:
Was the stationary truck meant to be there, and were adequate warning signs or hazard controls in place to alert other road users?
While we may not be able to conclusively answer all these questions at this stage, they highlight the recurring systemic issues surrounding road safety, accountability, and preventable loss of life.
I extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have tragically passed on to join the majority. May their souls rest in peace, and may this incident serve as a renewed call for stronger safety culture, responsibility, and enforcement on our roads.
